Jeff bridges played Rooster Cogburn. John Wayne played John Wayne playing Rooster Cogburn.

 

That is true, John Wayne played John Wayne in every movie he ever made.

 

Go back and watch The Searchers and then tell me he could not act.

 

There's another western he starred in that his acting was better than The Searchers, IMO. It was before he became really BIG.
I liked his acting best in The Cowboys. That was his best "John Wayne playing John Wayne playing the part" that I've seen; and a great flick, too!

Anyhow, all the trailers show Jeff Bridges doing really fine acting, a totally different approach to acting than John Wayne, IMO.

 

Yea... the Cowboys is probably my favorite John Wayne flick. My favorite before that one is the War Wagon.

 

You really should compare John Wayne to Lloyd Bridges, not Jeff. They were of the same era.

The Cowboys was great. The scene where he cures the kid of stuttering is classic, I still hate Bruce Dern.

 

I watched that with my son a few months ago. The thing that stood out to him was how the kids reacted to the black cook and how many times the word "ni**er" was used - he was shocked. Like it was the worst word that could be said - ever.

John Wayne was the same in every movie, pilgrim. You could never get to the character because John Wayne was always in the way. That's what happens when the actor stands out more than the character.

 

now, i've seen the Cowboys!

 

Which means he is not only not a great actor, but not an actor at all. He was a personality. One takes skill, the other doesn't.

I thought Bridges was much more believeable. I always thought, in real life, John Wayne strutting around would have gotten has fatass plugged before he ever even mounted his poor horse.
