Solid. if I were ranking Coen Brother movies, I would put it closer to the middle than the top. But still, solid.

In some ways it was better. Le Beouf, Mattie Ross, and Tom Chaney were better in this version. Jeff Bridges was not better than John Wayne but he did a fine job. Robert Duvall was great in the original but the guy who played Ned Pepper in this version was solid.

Wayne isn't even in the same league as Bridges as an actor or in playing that part. Bridges and the girl made the movie.

But I've always thought Wayne was a terrible actor and that standards have changed a lot regarding the quality of acting in general since those days.

John Wayne was a great actor. He was from a different era than what we see today. He could not be as gritty or "real" as guys can today. Do you realize that the first time he cursed on screen was in True Grit. He had been a big start for almost 30 years by then. How many tough guys do you think could make it in Hollywood today if they never cursed?

All that being said though Bridges did a good job and the girl was great.

Wayne was a major league "star" - an icon of the biggest degree. But to call him a "great actor" is a huge stretch.
