It was just a thought, I'm not really advocating.

For me, poor resource allocation would be taking a non impact player at 9.

Richardson is a really talented RB prospect, so drafting him at #9 would make a lot of sense if they hadn't just given $43 million (and $21 mil guaranteed) to Williams.

Just going with this for the hell of it. I don't recall the specifics of DW's deal but am gonna assume that he doesn't see that contract all the way through. Having Richardson in our pocket, younger and cheaper than Stew, makes a great transition from DW.

edit to add: Plus we'd get something for Stew, I don't know what, but if we dealt before the draft we'd be in position to get reasonably fair compensation. If there is no defensive player at 9, an extra pick later might be the way to go.

DW's signing bonus was reportedly $16 million, so there doesn't appear to be any way out of that contract any time soon.

No. Not until after the 2013 season would it make much sense. cutting him after 2012 would accelerate $9.6 million (his cap number for 2013 is $8.2 million). although, they could designate him as a 'June 1' cut and have $3.2 million hit the cap in 2013 and $6.4 in 2014. That is what they did with Wharton this year.

    Rotoworld salary numbers: 2014: $5.75 million, 2015: $6.75 million.

I guess the bonus is 3.2 a year. I know jack about contracts/cap stuff but wouldn't we save salaries for '13 &'14 if we cut him after 2013, and designated him a June 1 then? So 3.2 cap hit for '13/'14?

Heck we are no way gonna be able to sign Stew to a comparable deal and have them both on the team at the same time.

I'm think the slot for #9 will be in the 11-12 mil range over 4 years (with 5th year option)? Stew's would be a lot bigger.

Those salary numbers are right for 2014/15. And yes, you are correct that we would take a $3.2 million hit to our cap if we cut him after 2013 and designated him as June 1 but that hit would be to '14 and '15.

Oh yeah, I see I put the wrong years in there at the end.

For the sake of argument, we'd have Richardson, possibly Tolbert and a FA or maybe mid round back for about what DW would cost, salary wise. Plus the benefit of whatever we got for Stew.

We'd be giving up the services of an alternate selection at 9, so there's that too. I'm still down with helping our D, and not against OL help either. Just feel we need to get quality whichever way we go.

Even that wouldn't make sense given the $9.6 million. 2014 is the earliest I could realistically see the team parting ways with him, and 2015 is more likely.
