Trading down

How viable would it be to trade down with our first round draft pick? What could we expect in return for it? If we could get two late first rounders for our pick I would pull the trigger.

 

why?

 

Only team with 2 1st round picks below us would be New England and we'd somehow get screwed. I might would consider Cleveland's 2nd first round pick and their 2nd round pick and their 3rd or 4th (assuming they have those available), but that's about the only realistic option.

 

Possibly to recoup the 3rd round pick we traded away to Chicago.

 

In looking over the draft this year it does not look like there is a huge drop off in talent when you go from top ten down to late first. If we could come away with quality corner and WR then it would be great.

The Bleacher Report shows the Pats taking Devon Still and Mohamed Sanu with their two first round picks. That would probably help us more than Fletcher Cox who they show us taking with our pick.

 

I think problem here is reading Bleacher Report.

 

Why would you want more picks that the front office would just fuck up anyway?

 

If they have two picks instead of one they might get one of them right. It doubles the odds....

Seriously though, in the past they have done fairly well when they have traded down. Trading up is what has gotten us in trouble. Late first round and early second round players tend to be a sweet spot in the draft. Those guys are not hype machines or head cases nearly as often as the guys who go in the top ten. The Pats seem to have two late first round picks every year. That is one reason why they are always pretty good.

 

I would have tried to trade down last year. I would this year as well. Many holes to fill. How many more years do we get Cam??

 

The NFL is still structured so that you can keep a guy if you really want to. Indy is a small market but they managed to keep Peyton all these years. Green Bay is a small market and they kept Favre as long as they wanted. I suspect we will keep Cam as long as we deem it wise to do so. We may have to pay him a boat load of money and leave the team strapped for cash kinda like Indy did to keep Peyton but it can be done.

That seems to be how you win in the NFL is to find an elite QB and then put a decent group of role players in place around him. Most of the top teams follow that trend. The Giants go a bit further by having an elite DL. Their QB is not always elite though so it balances them out a bit.
