I could never really stand Axl's voice, and that's not really my style of rock, but I will admit that they ruled rock and roll for a good two or three years there. That is always impressive. And, while I may not like them, they did have some good songs (I always liked "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Out to get me" or whatever that song was called).

I think it's hard to make a list like this, because there are so many great songs and someone is always going to get snubbed. Otis Redding was great. And, the problem is, there are so many styles of rock now, that so many different people were large influences. I'm not really into overblown 70s rock, but people that are have a different interpretation of what "great rock" is. People that like bluesy rock like The Black Crows have a different idea of what rock is. People that like Heavy Metal and Punk rock, etc. all have different ideas.

I'm more inclined to call punk rock and its derivatives the closest to rock and roll, because they emphasize the back to basic approach that was prevalient in the "original" R&R.

The list I threw together is probably the biggest influences on what I consider rock and roll and therefore, are the most important to me in the history of rock.

I hate to tell y'all this, but it's about the songs, not about who performed them. You can't have a Who song in there just because 'a Who song belongs in there'. If they didn't make one of the top 10 R&R songs of all time, then none of their songs should be on the list.

Now come on, I didn't put My Generation on there because it was a Who song, I really tried to put the Top Ten songs as far as importance in R&R history imo...

Personally, "I Can See For Miles" is my favorite.

    You are right.

However, I was agreeing with an earlier statement concerning the Who. "How are you" is my personal favorite. Also, I think "Roundabout" by Yes, which I think maybe the first "Techno rock" song maybe number 11 (Though ELP had some around the same time). I just didn't think that Outkast was number 10?

That's right. Elvis is pop crap. He belongs on the heap with Britney and friends. I bet she'll be in your history book too, but that doesn't make her talented or rock.

Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Grand Funk, etc were rock bands.

Oh yeah. Hendrix was soooo much tighter. He didn't jam at all. Let the songs speak for themselves, as it were.

His treatment of the song is really cool. But it wouldn't have existed, or mattered, if Jimi hadn't done it. That's negating any improvisational depth that comes standard with the Dave version.

It's just another way of doing it. Hendrix owns that song.

Naturally, yeah, denouncing Jam in the name of Hendrix has me baffled. Jimi's best stuff, IMO, was taking blues heads and kicking the shit out of them for 20+ minutes without running out of ideas.
