Bad comparison. Dorsey has no arm. Clausen does.

You throw the ball on a rope 35 yards, you have an arm.

Clausen is getting hype. He's an underclassman, so it hasn't really started yet, but he's starting to get props. I posted one over the summer, even Caruso gave him props. He beats Florida and plays well, he will get more.

    From tfydraft.com

The man running the show behind center is Casey Clausen, a big, athletic, strong-armed passer that makes all the throws. Clausen easily drives the ball down the field or zips the outs and for the most part, throws with solid fundamentals, all along displaying the ability to make plays on the move. Two areas Clausen needs to work on are his timing and pass release; all to often targets wait for the pass as they come out of their breaks and he does not throw the tightest of spirals but all things considered, he is an excellent prospect for the future.

On arm strength? Great. You are right. Jeff George can throw the ball through a wall though. There's more to it than that.

On the fact that Dorsey and Clausen are both basically the captains of a REALLY nice ship? That's what I'm getting at. What's the difference? None if you ask me. They are not asked to do much of anything other than not fuck up. And they'll both win a lot. Clausen may have arm strength, but he's going to be hurt in the draft by the fact that no one REALLY knows how good the kid is.

    Two other things:
I'd take a LONG look at the Kansas State/Tenn tape from the bowl game two years ago if I were a GM. Clausen quit in that game. I don't like kids that quit. Even in bowl games that no one gives a shit about.

You mentioned Manning, but a few other Tenn QB's have won a lot in college only to do zip in the NFL. I'm sure everyone is as aware of this as we are. Even GM's. That may not be Clausen's fault, but it may play into it.

Edit: This is all speculation based on his declaring this year. I think if he stays and Tenn has two very good years then, yeah, he probably will end up in the first round. Just not this year.

Nice list, where do you get this stuff from?

Anyway since I specialize in QBs :D

    Quarterbacks
    Plummer, Jake, Arizona Cardinals maybe
Johnson, Rob, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Please - no
    Matthews, Shane, Washington Redskins no
King, Shaun, Tampa Bay Buccaneers maybe
    Blake, Jeff, Baltimore Ravens NO
Batch, Charlie, Pittsburgh Steelers Go good with Peete :D
    Frerotte, Gus, Cincinnati Bengals no
    Detmer, Koy, Philadelphia Eagles no

I just don't see any hands downs good grabs there. If Fasani does not meet his potential and Peete does not make it all year, we will probably see a journeyman type guy, like Peete next year.

Jeff George was a first round pick. First overall. Bust? Yes. But guess what. He had measurables. When you have all measurables, and are productive in college, you get picked in the first round. Unless you are Drew Brees, and you fall to the first part of the second.
Like it or not, the draft is about measurables still. You combine that with production….
Tee Martin hasn’t done zip, but he was never a top prospect. Why? No arm. Period.
The only rated TN QB in recent history other than Manning is Shuler, who was never as productive, accurate, or poised at TN as Clausen. He barely beat Vandy. But even he was a first round pick, because of his arm, and that alone. Again, that will get you in.
Clausen has all the other things, and the arm.

Clausen didn’t quit vs K-State, he got beat. Period. And that was a true freshman, 18 year old Clausen. A player who threw wobbly passes all year. That’s not the 20 year old Casey. This Casey throws a nice spiral with heat. Totally different QB.

If you have strong combine measurables, and have production, no matter the college, you get picked high. Show me a case where a guy with a gun and was productive in college didn’t get picked high.

I would tend to agree Sandman...
Batch would probably fit best of the guys on that list. I'm not in awe of anyone on that list - but Batch is fairly accurate and doesn't make a ton of mistakes unless he is getting blind sided by DE on every play. He is ok and might help here.

Of that list, I like the following the best:
Spikes/Peterson - although Spikes will NEVER get out of Cincy, could you image him in Navies spot? Damn. Peterson gets re-signed too, as he is their best defender.

McAllister - will command bigtime $ and might just look to move on. He is one of the very best in the league and if we are to sign a bigtime FA - he would be the best available with our needs. Won't happen because he would cost a fortune, but would be nice.

Edwards CB has looked fairly good this year and would help.

Coles could be a breakout player in waiting. However, he will command more than he is worth ATP and someone will fork it out.
He would add great speed and quickness to WR position as well as the return games.

Jackson is underrated ATP and would be a very good #2.

I’ll say this. If he puts up big numbers vs Florida and Miami, and wins one, drums will beat, he’ll leave, and go first round. If not, he’ll stay in.

Since you feel the need to explain to me how the world works, I'll share how mine works. Here's how I measure....wagering. If you'd like to figure out a way that we can make a small wager on whether or not this kid ends up in the first round at the end of this year - I'm all for it. I'm just not going to spend two years arguing with you over it. :) Some of you guys can argue over the smallest thing. Usually I'm down with that (see politics), but not over here where everyone thinks they are right. None of us are GM's or scouts. (apologies to anyone who might actually be a scout)

You see what you see and I see something different. I just don't see it for this year, but I still agree with you that he'd go first round....NEXT YEAR. Just not this year. It's as simple as that.

Hey - I'm still taking Tennessee on Saturday though.

I don’t know that he’s coming out. If TN wins those two big ballgames, I think it will be hard for him to stay in. And he won’t come out unless he’s a sure fire first rounder. That’s all I’m saying.

So let's say after the Miami game, you can get back to me on that wager. They win that one, I say he comes out and goes first round.

  9. Leftwich is going to take some coaching. Watch his feet when he throws...he reminds me of Andre Ware more than Culpepper. I'd like to see Pennington play some more in the NFL so we can judge if he is just a system QB like many of the BYU and Houston Cougars QBs have been. Keep in mind, Leftwich doesn't exactly face the strongest competetion....most of the schools he plays against are glorified div II schools that play in div I.

I love to argue over football. Endlessly. Just imagine me with a beer in my hand, and I'll come off better.

And no, I'm not a scout. But I enjoy playing one on TBR.
