Emmitt is a little over five hundred yards away from Payton's rushing record. Anyone wanna help me take a lead pipe to one of his knees? Emmitt doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Sweetness.

I agree and I'd be glad to help, if you promise not to take that pipe to me when finished with the Smithster... :D

What's wrong with Emmitt? I hate the Cowboys but I've always liked Smith. Never heard his name mentioned in all that crap that went on involving other Cowboy players during the 90's. He showed up on Sunday and played and then went home. Is he as good as Payton? I don't think so, but Smith has been a good RB for a long time. Wish the Panthers had found one like him in their early drafts.

Emmitt is one of the few Coyboys I have ever liked. Randy White and Bob Lilly being the others

I liked (and continue to like) Emmitt too. Though no one can eclipse Payton as a man or a player Emmitt Smith has earned every yard and deserved every accolade. He is a decent man off the field and a well-respected leader on it. As a running back he has always reminded me of a bullfighter the way he watches and waits then sidesteps or does that patented back step out of a would be tacklers grasp. He was fun to watch especially in his prime. I for one will miss him once he’s retired. However, anyone would be correct in suggesting that Smith is no Payton. Sweetness will always be in a class by himself.

I don't want anyone to EVER break Payton's record. I spent a large part of my life following Sweetness and the three ring circus they call Da Bears.
HOWEVER, The closer Smith gets to the record, the more comfortable I am with him getting to that mark. He's worked harder than anyone in the last 10-12 years and has been a stable citizen. Sure he's benefited from a better line than Payton in his early years, but Smith has earned his place in history to date. I don't want Smith to break the record, but he has earned the right to make a run at it.
Despite the stats, Payton will ALWAYS be the greatest player/personality in NFL history.

Emmitt, begrudgingly, earns it in my book. He never should have gained more yards than Barry - if Barry was breaking it I would have no problems. Hell, Jim Brown would have easily smoked the lot of them with a few more years. But Emmitt, I guess, deserves it as well. I just hate - I'm using the word hate - that Sir Walter has to lose the title.
