    Lex:

Ugliest band thread - I would recommend that you try to dig out the Pretty Things' S.F.Sorrow album. I think it was the first rock 'concept' album, but I may be wrong. When it was released, in 1968 I think - yes 34 years ago! - it was so far ahead of its time. I'm playing it as I type this and I still love it, but the sound is a bit 'thin' - recording studios were a little different in the 60s! If you get to hear it, bear in mind how old it is and I'm sure you'll be impressed. If not, sorry to build it up so much!

ok. nah, i am open to suggestions...

it just takes forever to download, or it could be i am too impatient. got used to audiogalaxy. now that it's gone, am having to strugge and adjust to kazaa. obtw, dont worry about the qualityof the recording. of course! i have cd's of crimson that sound excellent and they were done in the early 70's. when they're good, they are good, regardless!

if i like a certain band, i usually buy the cd or try to find it in used cd places. i go to several places here in denver and boulder. some places i call first and they'll find it for me, then i go pick it up.

pretty things might be tough to find, but i will find it eventually. sf sorrow album, heh? i might get lucky. obtw, have not even checked kazaa for that one yet.

football tonight, so i am happy. vikings are hosting the browns. my vikes do well in preseason, so i better watch cuz this might be my only fun this season. i am optimistc, tho.

denver broncos are playing the sf 49'ers tonight, too...

gonna be a fun night, cath. i know u are a panthers fan. most of you are here.
    :)

You can download S.F.Sorrow from WinMX, though it will take a bit of time. My favourite 'rocking' tracks are 'Balloon Burning' and 'Old Man Going', but there isn't a bad track on the album (but that's my opinion!).

If you like what you hear you can buy it over the net from www.songsearch.net for only $13.45 (and that's cheap compared to UK prices for CDs).

Yes, football tonight - I'm starting to get excited! I'll be listening to the Panthers game over the Internet, but it doesn't start until 1am so I may struggle to stay awake - I have a few cans of Newcastle Brown beside me and they're going down well!

So you're a Vikings fan living in Colorado. Why not Broncos? As you know, the Panthers won only one game last season, and that was against your boys! I'm pleased to say that I'll be in Minneapolis on September 22nd cheering on the Panthers (and in Green Bay one week later).

thanks for the link! pretty things is not anywhere in the denver or boulder area. but other good cd's are all here just waiting for me to buy them! :p

i am not too crazy about shopping via the internet for cd's cuz i want to touch first before i buy. however, that link might come in handy, so i thank you!

hey, the doncos played the bears last night. my mistake. they host the niners on a monday night football. i think the 19th of aug.

why not a doncos fan? because i am a vikings fan, that's why! am originally a sf 49ers fan. still am, but i chose the vikes. not like the niners, that was just handed to me from generation to generation cuz my family are a bunch of niner fans. joe montana is the man! heh.

anyhoo...too bad your panthers and my vikes lost last night. its ok tho. i'd rather look bad now and improve than look good and then get worse... the browns humbled us in our own dome! i hope you enjoy your time in minny and green bay. i bet you are excited! i know i would be. from where i am, minny is about 16 hours drive. not too bad.

ok, balloon burning and old man going. gotcha! :)

    Lex!

The track lineup of the original S.F.Sorrow album is:

    S.F.Sorrow Is Born
    Bracelets Of Fingers
    She Says Good Morning
    Private Sorrow
    Balloon Burning
    Death
    Baron Saturday
    The Journey
    I See You
    Well Of Destiny
    Trust
    Old Man Going
    Lonliest Person

Some of the tracks you have downloaded may have been on a re-released version, but not the original. When it first came out on vinyl it was released in a gatefold sleeve with all the lyrics and storyline printed on the inside. It's a 'rock opera', so ideally the tracks should be listened to in the correct order, preferably with the between-track text as well. The CD version I have has this too. It's on the Edsel label, released in 1987.

Coincidentally, after writing about Mountain earlier, I have since discovered that they're touring the UK later in the year - promoted as Leslie West's Mountain - and they're playing about 15 miles from where I live. Shall I go or not?

    how can you not?
    :D

ok, cath. i ordered this cd.

rock opera, so i guess i have to listen to it in the order it was meant to be played and listened to. the cd will be here in about 2-4 weeks. i will let you know what i think for sure.

obtw, i MIGHT be in minny on he 22nd as well for the panthers/vikes game. they are having a special this month on airfares to commemorate 9/11 tragedy. am coordinating this trip with a friend today. if i do go, i will let you know.

damn, and i thought i was being subtle!

man, you are too quick! now that you know, you might as well just fork the money now. it'll save me the trip and i wont have to beat it out of you. $12.99, please. no tax since you are from out of state. :D

guess what i have tho. i just found their 2-cd album called pretty things, the psychedelic years 1966-1970. 17 tracks on disc 1 and 18 tracks on disc 2! heh? "balloon burning" is track 13 on disc 2.

there are live recordings from 1966 and 1969. live, abbey road on "i see you" , "well of destiny" & "baron saturday". this is like the best of them, dude. obtw, there is a track on disc 1, track 7, titled: sf sorrow is born.

i cant listen to it no cuz it is late here. it is 1:18 am. i got this earlier today, but had not had the chance to put it on.

cool beans, cath! maybe i will clone this and give you a copy? hahahaha....or do you have this already?

This is getting worse - you're building up your Pretty Things collection and IT'S ALL MY FAULT!

I'm not familiar with 1966 - 1970, in fact I'm not too familiar with much pre-S.F.Sorrow. Some good stuff came later - "Parachute" was Rolling Stone's album of the year in 1970, I think, and there's some good tracks on "Silk Torpedo" - but S.F.S. is by far the best IMO.

The '70s is the era when I started getting into music, and thanks to this site I'm listening to some of the old stuff again: Pink Fairies, Roxy Music, Groundhogs, Kevin Ayers, Soft Machine, Jethro Tull, etc. Isn't nostalgia great?

I hope you can get to Minneapolis for the game. We'll have to meet up. If I survive the beating, I'll buy you a beer (or ten).
