"Thou Shalt not Kill" and War

    How does this play out? Not just soldiers, but officers sending the soldiers out? IF this has been discussed before, I'm sorry, I didn't see it.

    I think that it boils down to a bit of a mistranslation of the original text. The original used a word more akin to "murder." Which would mean that there were some distinctions made between that and other types of killing.

    Sly & hasbeens are more expert on the Bible though.

    According to Strong's Hebrew to English dictionary, the word translated as "kill" in Exodus 20:13 does indeed refer to premeditated and/or vengeful murder.

    However, someone could make a very strong argument that war is murder on a grand scale, which brings us back to the original question. To be honest, it's one that I've struggled with a lot, and still do.

    The Bible itself advocates righteous killings, so it's obviously not referencing all intentional deaths. As noted, the word is more correctly translated as "murder."
