I go to several medical forums and just read to keep up with the newest trends in medicine and ran across this.

It's on an HIV forum and a woman wrote it....

    New In NC

Well first I got HIV and now I'm in NC...which I could call something else. After living in NYC for all of my life...Infected in 97,sober in 01,HIV peer advocate, planning council member(up state NY)plus a lot more..all of this in six years... and now I come to north cackalacky...and low and behold!!!! What ever I learned or what ever help I can give I find out from the larger services here that I am not needed, there is no planning council, no outreach(illegal to hand out condoms),no long term rental assistance...I now have to pay a co-pay for my meds( 3 dollars a bottle is a lot if you are on a fixed income)....well I am just a little pissed off about the state of things here..It seems like people have been intimated into not disclosing, having a safe meeting place etc... I could be wrong...But when the Health Dept. treated me and my girlfriend like S... because we are lesbians and infected...makes me wonder! I just don"t know....

    Fuck her! :bitchslap:

NC didn't recruit her. NY didn't kick her out. I-95 North is still open!

She is getting a 1000$ bottle of meds for 3 bucks and apparently did not check out the local services for HIV patients before she moved.

Unless she was raped, is a hemopheliac or got it in vitro, the fact she is HIV positive is her own doing and she should take responsibility for that. That doesn't mean she should lay down and die, but she should not expect everything handed to her on a silver platter.

My question.... Do you think the health services in NC are adequate- not just for HIV patients, but in general?

I can't answer your question Fred, but I have grown a huge intolerance for those "on the teat" expecting a handout, griping at "the system" and whinging that if they lived anywhere but where they are, they could get it better. I know, it pisses me off too .

I can not get any meds for $3 per bottle. Even going through Canada they are not that cheap. My lowest co-pay is $10. It sounds like she is getting a lot of help to me. I bet AIDS drugs are much more expensive than my cholesterol meds for which I pay $30 for a bottle.

    nobody.

That's why a lot of HIV patients without insurance have to go on public assistance.

The drug companies know that the HIV patients have to have the meds to live and they can charge whatever they want to for them.

Im kinda surprised ya'll are slamming her. You all seem fixated on the fact that she's only paying 3 dollars a bottle and teating on wellfare.

But it sounds to me like she wants to help the HIV+ community and is just realising things arent set up as well down here as in NYC. (Who'd a thunk that).

"Unless she was raped, is a hemopheliac or got it in vitro, the fact she is HIV positive is her own doing and she should take responsibility for that."

This really blows my mind Fred. Watching someone die from Aids aint pretty. Nobody deserves that, one mistake can cost you your life. It might not even be your mistake, shit happens.

I went threw an ordeal of being with someone that was falsly diagnosed. I cant tell you how fucked up that situation was. NC hospitals are not my best friend.

What infurates me is people moving to another part of the county with a life-threatening illness without even checking to see what HIV services the new area offers and then raising hell. A lack of planning on her part does not mean it's an emergency on NC's part.

Many people who live off community services never get enough. They get a 1000$ bottle of meds for 3 bucks and it's still too much? Fuck her!

And working in the medical profession, I can just about guess that the people at her local health department didn't treat her like "shit" because she is a lesbian and infected. They treated her like "shit" because she is a bitch.

As far as "NC hospitals" not being your best friend.... the system is screwed in all states; not just NC.

And I've held the hand of many friends dying with HIV and am sure to go thru it again.

What part of her statement makes you think she wants to help the HIV+ community? It sounds to me like she's not being knelt down to and is pissed about it.

Her attitude is indicative of the entitlement mentality and it is by no means limited to those who are HIV positive.

This is true, but you dont know why she moved. But it does answer your question about NC hospitals being inadecuate, or at least the medical and social assistance. If your spouse leaves you over your illness and your too ill to work what are you gonna do? You better hope you have an understanding family. Aids is such a stigma.

Agreed that that sounds extemely pissy on her part, but im assuming this is just some womans rant on a forum.

Quite possibly, but that doesnt necessarily mean she didnt receive substandard service. Its not like nurses and doctors never have bad days or arent vulnerable to prejudices like the rest of us. I like to think their education has brought them beyond that kind of thinking.

Id imagine thats true of every country. But two wrongs dont make a right. Just seems there are a high amount of students in this area, or at least in the hospital i went to. Plus, when one Hospital screws you, then tries to cover it up, you tend to take that personally.

Id figured you had, thats why i was surprised by what you said.

    This part....

HIV peer advocate, planning council member(up state NY)plus a lot more..all of this in six years... and now I come to north cackalacky...and low and behold!!!! What ever I learned or what ever help I can give I find out from the larger services here that I am not needed, there is no planning council, no outreach(illegal to hand out condoms),no long term rental assistance...

I will say the "cackalacky" part wont win her much sympathy, but we all use that term every now and then. I dont know, every case is different. You dont know why or how some people end up in certain circumstances.
Sometimes the only place one can turn is the government, and thats a scary thought.

    no long term rental assistance...

Just wanted to add a comment about this. My GF brother (died two years ago, Aids related illness) tried to get something done about this before he died, a dying goal if you wish. Wanted to buy and set up a home where people with Aids could come and live. But he needed assistence to get it off the ground. He was on the news seeking pledges and donations but sadly the response was lacking and his dream never materialised.
