    I've spent the last few years enveloping myself in Mingus the way I did Bird ten years ago, when I first figured out what real music was. Mingus' relationships with horn players is still kinda hard to understand, though.

    I don't know if we are hearing the same, but, what I hear is a more integrated sound and concept. The horns, albeit several, are more integrated with the rhythm section rather than the more distinct/"separated" and traditional big bands, e.g. Kenton, Herman, Ferguson, etc. Also, the style lends itself more to improvisation, it's a more intimate feel, IMHO.

    No. In this case, I'm not talking about the music, I fully understand Mingus' concepts of a band. I'm talking about his actual fascination, as a person, with sax players. Dolphy, Lester, and so on.
