Yeah, that's kinda puzzling. If they did get Glaus, he'd have to move to first and that means bye-bye Millar (and possibly Mientiewicz). Glaus has a bad shoulder and even if he didn't, Mueller is signed for next year. (I guess Mueller could be moved to second and Bellhorn traded.) I read in today's Herald that they're looking at trying to sign Placido Polanco as a backup to Bellhorn.

How can you get rid of Millar? I mean, not only is he clutch and can play 3-4 different positions, but he is just insane enough to say believe that they weren't out of it after getting demolished by 11 runs to be down 3-0.

In the immortal words of John Winger - I wanna party with you cowboy.

Not saying I'd advocate getting rid of Millar. But if they picked up Glaus, they'd have to play him somewhere, and that's first.

That is why I said that Glaus doesn't make sense to me.

Looks like there is some movement on Varitek. I have to think that if they let Miller go then they have to be real close with Varitek

    Jason Varitek

Angels Nov. 23 - The Red Sox now have an offer for Varitek that includes a fourth year, but the total value remains unclear, according to The Boston Globe. The package, the newspaper suggests, is probably worth $34 million to $40 million. Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, is seeking a five-year deal worth $50-55 million with a full no-trade clause, something the Red Sox won't give to any player.

    Damian Miller

Dodgers Nov. 23 - The Brewers are expected to announce Tuesday the signing of catcher Damian Miller, a native of La Crosse, Wis., to a three-year deal, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Miller's agent, Bob Garber, was unable to get a third year out of the Red Sox, according to a source familiar with the talks. Miller, 35, was seeking a three-year deal for about $3 million per season.

I agree that Glaus makes no sense. Signing a high-priced free agent with injuriy troubles is a step backward and doesn't at all fit with Epstein's vision for the team.

I'm glad to see they're willing to work with Varitek, but I can't help thinking some team out there is gonna give him what the Sox won't.

Hear any of the rumors about the Yankees putting together a 4-year guaranteed offer to Pedro? The Sox have sweetened their offer to him, but it ain't for four years.

    today's Globe

Amid conflicting reports in New York about whether the Yankees have offered Pedro Martinez a four-year contract (the latest word is that the Yankees have not made any offer), the three-time Cy Young Award winner was quoted by the El Caribe newspaper as speaking favorably about his meeting with the Yankees.*

"The reception with the Yankees was huge," Martinez was quoted as saying. "The Yankees have a lot of respect for me."

He described Yankees owner George Steinbrenner as "a lot better than people think" and said he had a "very pleasant" encounter with Derek Jeter during the two-hour stop at the Yankees complex in Tampa.

The Sox, who last week improved their offer to Martinez to all but guarantee him about $40 million over three years, now appear poised to stand their ground until they see evidence that they are competing with any other team for his services. They have yet to be convinced he has received another serious offer.

Lucchino, who said ownership's meeting last week with Martinez "went fine," declined to discuss the negotiations. But when asked about reports in New York that the Yankees had offered Martinez as much as $60 million over four years, he said, "At this time of year, no matter who the free agent is, you have to be a little careful about about relying on newspaper and media data for information...

Assuming Nixon stays healthy, they won't need to rely on him nearly as much (although Trot does suck ass against lefty pitching, healthy or not). I wish Mientkiewitz would get his stroke back. It'd be nice to have him start a few games at first when Millar filled in in the outfield.
