Are you really saying Newton and Clausen are the same situation?

Has anyone listened to me repeatedly saying that QB peaks statistically later than any other position? And if you have, then why are so many still hung up on getting someone fresh out of college?

I love this. TBR was fucking dead a month ago. We rollin' now, fuckers!

I think former Baltimore Ravens coach, current NFL Network and FOX Sports commentator, and Super Bowl Champion Brian Billick could teach us all about his most noticeable trait.

anywhere I lay my head I'm gonna call my home
name me two things more important in quarterbacking than experience and accuracy.
What didn't Clausen have last year? What do we know Newton won't have?

    >>JC's got enough arm.

In a Todd Collinsish kind of way. Enough arm, at best. Jake had more. I can't think of a current established starter that has less.

    >>I don't care that he's "only" 6'2.

When a high percentage of your passes are deflected at the line of scrimage, I start caring. Several analysts, like Tim Ryan, critisized his stance as being too wide, making him shorter in the pocket. Perhaps it gets corrected, but it didn't get better in a full season. And while Sanchez is the same height, he weighs a bit more, seems stronger, and certianly has more athletcism.

    >>Accuracy is a concern, and that should've been good.

Weinke had a higher completion percentage.

    Again, I'm questioning his upside.

    >>this point I don't care if Clausen can be it, but it's amazing how people are condemning him to jump right back into the same situation with a different guy.

Because of upside. He's better a quarterback now IMO (not saying much), and with his skill set has obvious potential. He took a middle of the road SEC team to a national title. He's got less to fix, and more talent, than Tebow has or Vince Young had coming out. He doesn't have a funky delivery and limited downfield ability.

Perhaps I've talked myself into it simply because I think it happens anyway. He could bust out and we fucked for the next 3 to 5, sure. Or we could have our guy for 8. But let's not pretend he's Pat White.

Jake wasn't accurate, but we won with him. Smitty is that kind of receiver who will get it if it's close (Moose was also to some degree), and I think Jake knew that and took advantage of it. But Jake did have something I don't see Clausen getting any time soon and that's the unwavering support of his teammates. Clausen may end up being an OK QB, but I don't see that happening here with this roster. The pundits all say that Newton can't be a leader, but all his coaches seem to have experienced otherwise, so who do you believe? I think it would be interesting to see what Urban Meyer has said about his intangibles.
I wasn't for taking him, but I'm gradually starting to believe he is the best player to take at #1 if we don't have any takers to trade down.

Yeah....I get that, but it's also their reputation. That's why I think Meyer's take would be unique. He doesn't have anything to gain or lose either way.
