Callers, e-mailers, strangers on the street all want to know: Why is a grown man -- in this case righthander Grant Balfour -- walking around the Dome with a pink Barbie backpack?

Does it contain secret powers that keep inherited runners from scoring? No, just candy for bullpen consumption. Is it Balfour's good luck charm? No. He's lowest on the seniority list in the bullpen, and thus has been assigned backpack duty.

"If I didn't have to do it, trust me, I would not be doing it," Balfour said.

Righthander Juan Rincon disagrees.

"He likes all the attention," Rincon said, noting that Balfour recently made the ESPN highlights toting the pink pack.

 

They should put pokemon and teletubby stickers all over it too.
