On a typical running play, if all 11 players on both the offense and defense execute their assignments to perfection, what would the result be?

In other words, you always here the coaches talking about how if their defenders would contain their lanes, get off the blockers, etc. etc. I always wonder, well what if the offense is doing what their supposed to do also, who wins? Could one side or the other do everything perfect and still get beat? Hypothetically speaking of course.

the physically stronger of the 2 would win at that point... scientifically they would have the most force... if the defense were phyisically stronger they'd stop a perfect offense or push them back... identically if the offense were physically stronger they'd achieve a small gain in yardage

this is impossible b/c the defense would have to get off their blockers while the blockers would have to hold there blocks!

Again, HYPOTHETICALLY, all players are equal size, strength and ability.

The play would be called dead as the running back would be stopped of his forward motion. All eleven players on each side stopped at the line of scrimmage. This is much like the Panthers offense works anway. So I guess you could say our offense doesn't suck, it's run to perfection.

Wow shrap, you are a football genius.:)

Trust me, it's not possible. You have 11 guys on offense trying to do what they want to do and 11 guys on defense trying to prevent them from doing it. It's a push, the outcomes vary based on physicality and mentalaity.
Wait a minute, when I was in HS returning punts, I guess your question was answered. The Punter would kick the ball and as soon as the thump of the ball leaving his foot sounded, it became the assignement of the other 10 players on my team to watch me get killed...and the 11 oponenets assignment was to kill me!

Well, that sounds to me like the defense won that play then. If they all stopped at the line, then I don't think the O-line did their job to perfection.

Dammit! Somebody come up with something better than these weak attempts at answers.

I would have to say the offense gets a short gain. They have more linemen, plus tight end and fullback. Also, they know where they are going with the run and when the ball will be snappped.

    here, lemme take a shot...

this is what i would call a waltz with neither side winning, but the couple would win first prize. in fact 11 first place trophies would be handed out on every play.

it would make synchronized swimming look manly!
    :p

    good morning.
