North Carolina opened up its summer camping season Friday night with the first session of its two-day camp.

Roughly 30-40 recruits participated with just about all in attendance looking to earn a UNC scholarship offer.

    * Hands down the biggest recruit on hand was 2011 quarterback Justin Worley (Rock Hill (S.C.) Northwestern). Throughout the night, Worley and his father received heavy attention from John Shoop, UNC’s quarterback coach, and Butch Davis.

Worley didn’t disappoint with his performance. He throws a beautiful ball and his touch and accuracy was unmatched Friday night.

    * A surprising quarterback performance came from Drew Davis (Chapel Hill (N.C.) East), son of head coach Butch. Since Butch’s arrival in Chapel Hill, Drew has been a regular at UNC’s camps working out under Shoop. However, Friday night marked the first session where Drew, a 2012 prospect, looked like he belonged.

    * Speaking of UNC family kin, signee Josh McKie’s younger brother, Jeremiah, worked out Friday night. The younger McKie, a 2011 athlete, primarily practiced with the quarterbacks, but did run some routes with the receiver group.

At quarterback, McKie didn’t throw with as much command as others in the group.

    * Seeing the biggest stock rise Friday was tailback C.J. Frederick (Benson (N.C.) West Johnston). Frederick received a lot of praise from Ken Browning, UNC’s running backs coach, during position oriented drills and Butch Davis joined him during one-on-one drills.

Frederick has quick feet, great change-of-direction, and definitely passes the look test. He gave opposing linebackers fits during one-on-one passing drills.

    * The defensive back group was among the largest and maybe the most talented. A couple of participants drew strong praise from Everett Withers, UNC’s defensive back coach, including Devonta Tabannah (Oxon Hill (Md.) Potomac).

Other defensive back standouts include Jordan Mays (Apex (N.C.) Middle Creek) and Chandler Wrightenberry (Asheville (N.C.) Roberson).

Kevin Johnson (Clarksville (Md.) River Hill), who is high on UNC’s recruiting board, watched the defensive back group from the sidelines Friday night. He’s expected to work out for Everett Withers on Saturday.

    * Although extremely raw, linebacker Markie White (Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford Co.) flashed tons of potential Friday night. Art Kaufman, UNC’s linebacker coach, took White under his wing and attempted to fix White’s technique and mental errors. During one-on-ones, White had several pass breakups, including one near interception.

    * Seth Cranfill (Catawba (N.C.) Bandys) was among the standouts of a large tight ends group. Allen Mogridge, UNC’s tight ends coach, spent a great deal of time with Cranfill and his father following Friday’s practice session.

    * The camp resumes Monday and additional prospects are expected to be in attendance, including one of the state’s best in David Amerson.

Forgive Hakeem Nicks for sailing the first pitch high at Citi Field on Thursday night. He hasn't played baseball since, well, ever.

"I was just always a football and basketball player growing up," said Nicks, a wide receiver from North Carolina who the Giants chose with the 29th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Nicks and the rest of the Giants 2009 draft class attended Thursday night's game between the Mets and Phillies.

"They said all the rookies had to come to the game," he said as he sat in the dugout about an hour before gametime. "First pick had to throw the first pitch. So it came with the job."

Nicks wore a Giants jacket as he walked out to the mound with the rest of the draft class. He stood about a foot in front of the rubber and looked out towards home plate.

Bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. had to leap out of his crouch to reel in the throw - but at least he caught it.

"A few of our equipment guys gave me some advice," Nicks said, "but I don't think there's too much advice to give, it's just throwing the ball to the person who've catching it."

Today’s session began with 40-yard dash timings. Before breaking into position drills, the camp was separated into three groups for agility drilling.

    * Safety David Amerson (Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley) was the highest profile recruit in attendance this morning – and the only participant with a UNC scholarship offer. Amerson, who has only played organized football for one season, is still very raw with his technique and that showed in many of the defensive back drills. However, during one-on-one passing drills Amerson was at his finest. He did not allow a single pass completion and was very effective with his jam.

    * Kevin Johnson (Clarksville (Md.) River Hill) was among the most impressive defensive backs. His ability to change direction during drills drew praise from the UNC coaching staff, especially John Blake. He has a skinny, long frame.

    * Devonta Tabannah (Oxon Hill (Md.) Potomac) was also very impressive, but his lack of ideal height will hurt his chances of receiving a UNC scholarship offer.

    * Justin Taylor (Norwood (N.C.) South Stanly), who has seen a huge rise in his recruiting stock in the last month, was among the new participants this morning. Understandably, Taylor was among one of the more raw campers – his technique was constantly being tweaked by coaches. His technique can easily be improved with good coaching, but his size-speed ratio is something that cannot be coached. In drills, he showed quick feet, and tremendous range and change-of-direction ability.

    * Accompanying Taylor were two very impressive 2012 prospects – 6-3 quarterback/athlete Jaylen Holt and lineman Wes Cole. Holt has the bloodlines – his older brother, Brandon, currently plays wide receiver at Wingate - and he is cousins of Virginia Tech’s Cory Holt and former Tar Heel Cedric Holt.

    * UNC’s just-arrived freshman Terry Shankle was on hand supporting his former South Stanly teammates.

    * C.J. Fredrick (Benson (N.C.) West Johnston) continued to impress, especially during one-on-one passing drills. He’s so quick and crafty that linebackers have a difficult time covering him. He ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.6-range, but much of that is attributed to his takeoff and running technique – not his actual speed.

    * Major Bryant (Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley) was among the linebacker standouts. He unofficially ran a 4.82-second 40-yard dash.

    * Current Tar Heels Tydreke Powell and Aleric Mullins stopped by the camp late in the session.

    * This two-day camp concludes today with an afternoon session.

Kenan Stadium hosted the final session of the two-day camp, Saturday afternoon. The session began late and was cut shorter than the previous two sessions.

Most of the “earth shattering” items occurred in the earlier camp sessions. Top recruits like Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley’s David Amerson and Major Bryant, and Justin Worley (Rock Hill (S.C.) Northwestern) had already left campus. The camp additions were minimal and Don Hursey (Washington (D.C.) Woodson) was the only significant newcomer.

    * According to IC sources close to the situation, much of the focus of the camp has been on the defensive backs. The DBs that have impressed the staff the most throughout the camp include: Amerson, Hursey Kevin Johnson (Clarksville (Md.) River Hill), and Devonta Tabannah (Oxon Hill (Md.) Potomac).

Hursey, who sported a long chiseled frame, showed great range and excellent reaction time. During one-on-one passing drills, he had two near interceptions.

    * Throughout the camp, 2011 linebacker James Vaughters (Tucker (Ga.)) and his father received a ton of attention from UNC’s coaching staff. Vaughters and his father arrived in Kenan Stadium for the final session with Butch Davis.

    * Devonte Lindsey (Forestville (Md.) Suitland) worked out most of Saturday with the quarterbacks. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder looked great during the AM session’s agility drills, but looked out of place as a passer throughout the day. Thus, late in the afternoon session, he was moved to wide receiver, where he looked expectedly raw but showed some promise.

    * At the end of the camp, Justin Taylor (Norwood (N.C.) South Stanly), his coach, and his parents held conversations with several members of UNC’s coaching staff. His coach, Luke Little, told IC that the staff informed him that UNC would continue to track Taylor but they wouldn’t be offering him at this moment. The reasoning was that Taylor didn’t exactly fit what UNC is looking for at DE.

    * Jeremiah McKie (Maudlin (S.C.), a 2011 athlete and brother of UNC signee Josh, hurt his shoulder while diving for a passing during one-on-ones Friday night. He didn't participate all day Saturday, as a precaution.

    * Several Tar Heels dropped by the session, including T.J. Yates, Mike Paulus, Michael McAdoo, and Tydreke Powell.
