I wouldn't blame him at all if he wanted to leave. You never feel good about a kid who has been built up with hype and expectations and yet ends up riding the pine. It makes me think of Ronald Curry, who had a pretty good college career, but couldn't enjoy it because everyone expected him to be more and he was constantly compared against Vick.

With Sexton and possibily Paulus gone, who will UNC turn to if Yates gets injured?

This has been talked about for a while now. Paulus is smart to wait it out, and give his best shot this spring. I suspect he will solidify the number two spot and keep it in the fall.

If, however, he falls behind Hanson, with Renner coming in, then he will probably leave and who can blame him?

You know, every year there are good - maybe great - football players that are sitting on the bench because they just aren't as good as someone else. Every school attempts to bring in a potential starter each year, but only one is going to actually win the job. That means that usually 3-4 quality players are sitting on the bench, waiting their opportunity.

Paulus seems, to me, to be the type that can actually play this game - and well. His timing is very bad. He's here at the same time as another qb who is basically in the same class. I think he takes it as competetion and works his ass off to be at the point of a turned ankle away from playing. He knows what he needs to do. TBR aren't the only people talking about his expectations.

That being said, the guys that know the players on Inside Carolina have talked to Mike about it, and he says "that's out of left field, he's never seen it, heard it or said it" That article is a "blog" and anything can be said obviously, especially a desperate program like Syracuse right now. He's had 10 or so snaps and is a redshirt freshman, it's going to take more than that to see what he can do.

Agreed. It would be different if Yates was a senior. I don't know that you wait out your career for one starting chance at the end.

    Blake Staying Put

“The University of North Carolina and its fans have been very good to my family and I,” Blake told Inside Carolina on Friday. “The fans’ support for us to win conference championships and national championships is second to none.
“My family and I really enjoy being at North Carolina and any rumors about me leaving are totally false. I am looking forward to continuing in the Carolina program under Coach Butch Davis’ leadership as we continue to elevate the program to national prominence.”

Blake says the published reports indicating he may leave UNC to take a job with the New York Jets new staff under Rex Ryan are not true.

“Rex Ryan is a very special friend of mine, but Carolina is family,” Blake said.

During Blake’s tenure as head coach of Oklahoma, Ryan served as Blake’s defensive coordinator for the 1998 season.

Blake is highly regarded as a defensive line specialist and as a recruiter. Two experts in this week’s issue of The Sporting News selected Blake for “Best Recruiter of 2009,” as UNC’s current recruiting class is ranked Top 5 nationally by The Sporting News and by Scout.com

    John Blake recruiting lights out

A glance at the national team recruiting rankings, and the top five are no surprise. LSU, Ohio, USC, Texas, Alabama.

But check out who’s knocking on the door at No. 6.

    North Carolina.

A big reason for that is former Oklahoma head coach and current UNC defensive line coach John Blake, who’s recruiting like a man on fire for Butch Davis and the up-and-coming Tar Heels.

According to Rivals.com, Blake had a hand in landing at least eight commitments for UNC, including five-star defensive end Donte Moss, the No. 16-ranked overall prospect nationally.

He also helped UNC reel in Jheranie Boyd, the nation’s No. 3 wide receiver, who at one point was being pursued heavily by OU.

Blake, who’s been at UNC since 2007, hasn’t just been a big-time recruiter, either.

Last April, he turned two perennial underachieving defensive linemen into NFL Draft picks, including first-round selection Kentwan Balmer.

Say what you want about Blake’s tenure as OU’s head coach.

But there’s no dispute, he’s one of the top performing position coaches in all of college football.
