    the melody has been said to be of scottish or irish origin, but some believe Newton got the melody from the slaves singing negro spirituals on the ship as he brought them over.

    Newton had nothing to do with the melody. Its an old bagpipe tune called "New Britain" so I dont believe its possible he got the tune from slaves. Many songs back then apparently used common existing melodies but put different lyrics over them (Early day sampling per say). A practice still employed at every Soccer stadium in England. It does have Southern colonial linkage but i think that just comes from the scots-Irish that emmigrated over to the States.

    But the lyrics are most definately inspired from his time working aboard slaveships.
