Actually understanding what someone is saying before responding? Shocking, I know.

Don't care about "right". I care about the rules set forth by the two people who mod here and the guy who pays the bills. I'd say I'm probably more likely to judge "right" than a guy trying to cause trouble, FWIW.

That's fine. You can do whatever you want, but you know there is a cost to those rules.

Good call. I feel a little silly just peeking in here periodically to make sure threads are properly policed. Very seldom do any threads here remotely interest me anymore. Maybe if we take the Be-Nice Filter off we'll see a "revival" of participation.

It might not be what you'd get at a Bible study, but I submit that the exchanges would be brutally more frank, honest, and revealing than anything you'd get inside the walls of a church. There are people who might benefit from that. Between safe pre-packaged doctrines and uncensored testing in the real world, individuals derive their own truths... the only ones that really matter when all is said and done. So this forum could still serve a purpose of a kind.

y'all should figure out what you want, so I can stop wasting time trying to enforce rules I was under the assumption you cared about.

Maybe just let the sub-forum mods enforce the rules?

I can only speak for me, but I prefer a true discussion over stupid Internet flaming any day. Even so, the rules here exist for TBR users. Users don't exist for the rules.

Maybe the change should be subtle instead of drastic. Maybe we could say, we'll strive for a respectful environment, but we won't censor or delete exchanges when they get testy; let them run their course.

This will inevitably lead to fifteen-page threads of two or more posters doing that "quote and retort to each and every line you posted" thing. Like in Politics; go figure. I usually tune out when it degenerates to that point, but see no reason not to let them take their natural course.

Moderators of any forum should retain privilage of thread-moving if a thread wanders completely off topic for a sustained period. But otherwise I'm willing to stop being a potshot Nazi... IF 1) if the users of this forum are cool with it and 2) if my co-moderator can go along with it. I have a feeling he might.

But we need to hear from the forum as a whole. Feel free to chime in, anybody.
