I saw the movie first and it scared me so much I could never bring myself to read the book.

I read The Shining for the first time back in '78. Scared the begeezus out of me then. I identified with Danny, the kid, then. Even at 16, I had a hard time turning my back on hedges after that read.

When I reread it 2 years ago, I identified with Jack and, now that I was a parent, it scared me even worse. Excellent read by an excellent storyteller.

Another book that I found really scary was "Silence of the Lambs."
I read it prior to the movie being made. Maybe the best "serial killer" novel ever.

Bag of Bones by King was good, too. I freaked out when the guy was looking in the fridge and he heard the magnetic alphabet letters being moved around by the ghost.

To be honest, I loved the movie with Jack Nicholson - who put on an excellent performance, but it doesn't do the book justice.

Totally different in a lot of ways.

As for serial killer books - I've already purchased Intensity by Dean Koontz and heard it is a very good read. I'm looking forward to that one.

Scariest book I ever read was Christine, by Stephen King. Loved the movie, but the book scared me to death.

    Yeah, I'm a wuss. I know. :(

stephen king uses entirely too much metephore and spends way too much time developing characters. and his warped mind ain't that scary. i read salem's lot, cujo, christine and firestarter. coontz is much creepier.

I like Coontz. And I think that King was getting paid by the word during THE STAND, IT, and The Gunslinger series. I quit reading after the first tower book. I hated that shit. It was boring.

King spends too much time on descriptive stuff for me. I really like John Saul's stuff. I think I've read Koontz too, but I can't be sure right now.

The Gunslinger is slow and very hard to understand... I almost didn't go the next book.. But damn. the series really takes off and becomes very interesting after the Gunslinger.

The scariest story I read was a short story by mr. king.. It was in Everythings Eventual... I don't remeber the story title but it was about a painting that a guy buys at a yard sale.. just trust me. read it.. scary as hell...
