October's 'National Geographic' magazine has an excellent story on the flu that may be spreading around the world this year and is already hitting Asia hard. They are comparing this one with the flu that killed millions back in 1918.

GET THOSE FLU SHOTS FOLKS! The vaccine is made of a DEAD virus and you can not catch the flu from a dead virus. Years ago, the vaccine was from a live virus which is why some people actually caught it from the vaccine.

the flu shot that comes out each fall is for the strains that have a vaccine that they think will hit the US. If one is not vaccinated for those strains, their body will be more at risk for other strains (such as the bird flu.)

The same rational is true when you have a bad virus, the MD may give you an antibiotic even tho antibiotics dont work on a virus. It helps prevent a bacterial infection from coming along and kicking your butt while you are weaked.

different strains are out there. your body has not built up immunity to the ones you have not caught.

check with your MD. you may want to wait a little later to take the vaccine but you still need it.

washing hands often and not shaking hands with people is a good way to avoid catching thins like the flu or the common cold.

you cough into your hand or blow your nose then reach out for a handshake.
