I'll check out a little of opening day and then watch a few games in the playoffs and not miss a thing.

Tell that to Sox fans and Yankee fans. Once the playoffs begin, and these two teams meet, those other games don't matter for most part. It's only overrated to those who are fans of neither team. And that's understandable. I'm sure college football fans who aren't alumni of either Ohio State or Michigan would consider that rivaly "overrated."

Great hockey rivalries have all but disappeared as interest in that sport has waned. What are the great pro hoop rivalries. Lakers-Kings? Lakers-Spurs Pistons-Pacers? (Don't say Lakers-Celtics. They haven't played a meaningful game in years). Pro football rivalries come close. Packers-Bears, Patriots-Jets, any Raiders-Broncos-Chiefs or Cowboys-Giants-Eagles-Skins combination.

So what would you consider a great rivalry?

Rivalries generally tend to be most intense with the fans of the teams involved. In that respect I guess the Sox/Yankees do have a rivalry. And there's history behind all that, too, so that makes a difference.

But given that the Yankees have lost more World Series than the Red Sox have appeared in makes me think it's overrated as a rivalry.

Why bother? you could point out the cold, hard fact that the Dodgers blow flaccid moose cock and they wouldn't believe it.
