The Sex Pistols were the boy band of the punk genre. A prefab group made up to promote the punk idealism and sell product. The Ramones ARE Punk IMO and always will be.

The Sex Pistols a boy band ..... now that's funny! :D

I suppose it's what you perceive punk to be. In my mind it's a complete package of music, dress, attitude, etc. Punk was a visible statement - ripped clothes, safety pin, spiked hair - as well as rebellious music. The Ramones didn't have that (except perhaps for the knees in their denims!). I'm not knocking the Ramones - they were a great band - and the Sex Pistols were too (until McLaren's influence took over). Neither should be in the most over-rated category. Let's leave that for bands like U2.

Is a safety pin known by another term in America?

Another one to add to my list: The Black Crowes.

REM followed closely by the Rolling Stones, because they have hung around WAYYYYYYYYY too long.

Interesting that no body has mentioned Sting.
