.....the more I realize that I should have auditioned for the Panthers Radio/TV Network....

Beuerlein joins TV team for preseason

CHARLOTTE -- One of the Carolina Panthers' most popular players will be back in the fold for the preseason -- the entire preseason this time.

Former quarterback Steve Beuerlein has signed on to do color commentary for all four of the team's exhibition TV broadcasts, which are syndicated throughout the Carolinas.

Joining Beuerlein in the booth will be play-by-play man Gary Williams, who hosts WFNZ-AM's "Morning Sports Page." Pete Yanity, the sports director at Spartanburg's WSPA-TV and the play-by-play man for Clemson football, will return for his fifth season as sideline reporter.

The Panthers were able to bring back Beuerlein, who was unceremoniously dumped by then-coach George Seifert in 2001, for a single game last year. Two of the team's other preseason games were shown nationally, and former University of North Carolina tight end Ethan Horton did the other.

This year, the team was able to secure Beuerlein for the entire slate, which begins with an Aug. 13 game against Washington.

While Williams is a familiar voice to Charlotte sports talk listeners, he's a relative newcomer to football play-by-play. He did college games for the now-defunct C-SET network last year, and has done sideline reporting and basketball play-by-play for ESPN regional broadcasts for several years.

Williams said Tuesday he was excited about the opportunity to add to his quickly growing resume.

"To be able to have a chance to do NFL games is a great opportunity, and a nice step for me," Williams said. "Last year was my first experience doing play-by-play (for football), but I wouldn't have pursued this if I thought I'd embarrass myself or the team for that matter. I'm really excited about this." In past years, Panthers radio network play-by-play voice Bill Rosinski did preseason television, but the team chose to not renew his contract this offseason. With replacement Mick Mixon joining Jim Szoke and Eugene Robinson on the radio, the decision was made to let those three use the preseason to develop chemistry.

This is good for the Panthers and Steve. He loves the Panthers as do we.

I have a feeling Steve could be a good coach

I think Steve is a GREAT addition....it's this Gary Williams guy that concerns me....he has a very nasaly, whiny voice....and had very little PBP exp.....they could have done better than both Mick and Gary....very odd.
