well, he's been out there at practice every day and has talked with coaches and has watched film with them. i'm going to defer to fox on this and say that he knows more about the situation than we do.

I see the logic, Larry, and can get behind it being ballsy. But such things backfire a lot more than they work out, just from my impression.

And I just can't remember Peete ever really hitting that read himself.

Yep. it's ballsy, we hope it works out. And Weinke was still the guy who made the most plays inside the pocket, executing the offense. He struggled as well, but there were two options - fix it privately, or bench him in public. Privately fixing it would have been less ballsy, but there's less chance of ruining a quarterback and putting a franchise back two years.

i'd like to say that weinke is the quarterback of the future, i really would. i just don't think that he's the quarterback of the present. obviusly, he's not ready enough for fox. that's fine by me.

i'm not sure how you can handle demoting your starting qb in a private manner. i'd rather it happen like it did -- just get it out there and let the chips fall.

piper, like i said, i'm not really concerned about weinke here. he either sinks or swims. whatever.

what i like is that it's a move this franchise has never made -- for someone to say, "you know what? you aren't playing well enough for us to win games." and then to back it up by making a move.

so it backfires? the panthers are out weinke, a fourth-round pick, and we can all agree that next year's first pick will be a quarterback -- FINALLY a franchise quarterback.

No, I'm not buying it still. If Peete struggles and we go 0-2, and then Fox says Weinke's ready and we go 2-2, everybody will say we could have been 4-0.

If we go 2-0, I don't care how ready Weinke is, he ain't playin'.

I don't care if your at pratice everyday for 10 years, Peete has played 2 quarters. He's going to fuck up.

Q:How many int's do you think he has to throw before Fox puts Weinke in?

A:There is no answer because no matter what happens, Weinke's gone.

If Fox puts Weinke in and he performs, Fox will look like a damn fool for pulling him in the first place. Nope, Fox wants "his guy" in there.

That would be fine. If he flames out, he flames. He should show charachter.

My fear is that we will pussyfoot with him. We'll keep that hope for him, he'll flash ability, then Fasani will, and we'll draft Dorsey....

    And so on.

I'd rather work though with your guy, until he's not your guy. Then dump him.

Private manner? Make up an injury, if you MUST bench. Otherwise you do what you're paid to do - coach, adjust, manipulate. Figure out what the problem is with the line and with the quarterback v/s strong consistent pressure, figure out how to develop the reads v/s the coverages he struggles against, and monitor it.

There's no guarantee that a franchise quarterback is going to be great. Shiny new toy for the new season. And another long learning curve as we figure out in 2005 whether our $50 million QB is going to be someone else's Dilfer or our Aikman. I'd have more confidence in that if we hadn't given up quite so early on our current prospect. That has nothing to do with who that prospect is, IMO, or what we paid to get him.

It sounds like a great storybook situation that we FINALLY get the playmaker combo that we don't have. And then all's right with the world and no one's left to blame, so therefore we must win.
All the same, a 2nd round receiver won't be Williams or Washington, and a first or second round QB (by Fox's current words) probably won't be starting immediately. Do we start Peete for two years? Is that worth it?

SteveB got the job because he ain't Kerry Collins. Jeff Lewis got it because he ain't Steve. Weinke got it because he ain't Lewis. Now Peete's got it because he ain't Weinke. I'm sure Fasini will get his shot too, just like the others, buy default, and I'm sure more will follow.

Of all the QB's that played poorly enough to lose the job, Weinke played the best, or I should say "least worse".

Just once why can't somebody play well enough to win the job?

I'm with Piper, play your guy until he's just not your guy. It's just that I think that is the case.

Y2, I want to take Fox at his word that he still plans on developing Weinke. I'd rather think that than think that same feeling when I heard Jeffers was struggling with his microfracture knee yet again at the start of this year...the feeling you know he's screwed but it'll be months before you can truly confirm.

But yeah, I'd love to see someone play well enough to win a job straight out. Figure that's the idea here.

And you forgot Reich, who never really beat out Trudeau. Collins of course never really beat out Reich. Then again he never really beat out Beuerlein either.
