I'm pretty sure that The Exorcist (at least the book) is based on a case from the early 1900's.

    I wanna see 'Emily Rose'.

I think I was expecting it to be a little better. It's like the movie didn't know if it wanted to be an episode of "Law and Order" or a movie about possession. As a Law and Order episode it kind of missed because the hollywood lawyering was kind of weak and the stakes just weren't that high. The worst the priest would have gotten would have been a few years, which is not that big a deal considering the gravity of what he had been dealing with. Plus, they barely addressed the parents' feelings or wishes with regard to the trial. The defense barely used the people who would have been the biggest help to their case.

As a movie about possession, I thought it kind of missed too. It didn't develop the character of Emily Rose much before the possession started, so you didn't feel as bad for her as you might have if we had known what she was like beforehand. Then, the scenes where she was violently possessed were shot all jerky and shaky, and she's just contorting her face and doing a lot of "horror movie-ish" things. I thought that actually made the possession parts less scary than they would have been if they had been shot straight and we were able to see it as if it were real.

It was OK to rent, and the stuff about 3:00 was interesting, but it's a case where the actual story probably would have been more interesting than the movie they tried to build around it.

I was let down by the movie. Not enough gore or sex or good creepy stuff. Focused too much on the trial which is stupid in the first place.

If you read the real story, which I did after watching the movie, then you find out that the reason they had to have some bumfuck pastors do it is because the catholic church said that the girl clearly wasn't possessed and was just in need of medical attention.

The true story was of a family of superstitous fucks and some hick ass german pastors who killed a girl by not getting her proper help.
