Wrong. You need to read the allegations against UNC-CH. One of them is that they failed to investigate known issues. Here is the allegation from the NCAA:

"The failure to investigate in 2009 and 2010 when provided with information regarding impermissible benefits provided to players."

UNC-CH knew and covered it up. They didn't start suspending UNTIL the NCAA started investigating. Little too late for the NCAA at that point.

 

Not to mention players getting money from that agent (and we can safely assume that came through the Assistant Head Coach as NCAA doesn't require a burden of proof). I also want to know where the tutor (while working for Butch Davis) got the money to pay those parking tickets.

Also, speaking of which, the NCAA didn't even mention those parking tickets and the fact that some of the cars' plates have been traced to a former car dealer now sitting in jail for money laundering. More to come maybe?

Oh yeah, when UNC-CH had to release those phone records, they were able to not have to release Butch Davis' because he wasn't using a school-issued phone for school-related business (ie HIS JOB). He had a personal phone apparently. Wonder why he didn't want to use a school-issued phone?

 

You add the charges surrounding an assistant coach/agent/player relationship with academic intergrity issues and SOMETHING major has to occur. Of course, major, is a relative term these days.

 

Well, we are talking about the NCAA who is about as corrupt as any organization. Though, I imagine USC would let the lawsuits fly if UNC-CH gets off easy.

 

USC is a much higher profile football school and the NCAA came down on them pretty hard so it would make sense the NCAA would approach UNC the same way, although proportionally to the charges of course.

Tudor: No answers, just questions for Heels

From day one, the NCAA's investigation into North Carolina's football program has had the markings of a mystery.

While the same probably can be said of most NCAA probes, the case involving the Tar Heels seemingly involves a large number of unanswered questions.

Nine specific allegations have been charged by the NCAA, and it's important to remember that the school will have the chance to present its rebuttal to the governing body. The final resolution of the case may not come until 2012.

But here are a few questions that still seem pertinent:

1.Where did former tutor Jennifer Wiley get the money to pay off almost $2,000 in parking ticket fees and air travel for players?

An answer is not presented by the NCAA in the second of the nine charges. Did she simply pay for everything out of her own pocket or was she provided with funds by someone else or perhaps reimbursed?

2. In the fourth charge, seven players are said to have received more than $27,000 in illegal benefits during 2009 and 2010 from an assortment of agents, former Carolina players and a Florida-based jeweler.

Coach Butch Davis is not charged with having knowledge of any of those infractions, but why didn't he know?

At any given time, there are approximately 90 players in the program being supervised by nine assistant coaches, plus Davis, plus graduate aides, plus an extended support staff, plus a fully staffed athletic department charged with maintaining NCAA compliance.

3. In the sixth allegation, former associate head coach and top recruiter John Blake is said to have steered players directly to the late agent Gary Wichard.

How was Blake running such an elaborate and blatantly unethical operation without the knowledge of someone on the football or athletic department staffs?

4. Upon Blake's early September resignation following the season-opening game - more than two months into the investigation - he was paid almost $75,000 in severance.

Why was Blake paid anything? He wasn't fired. He quit.

5. In the ninth and final allegation, the NCAA asserts that Carolina was advised by a player in 2009 of possible infractions and did not adequately investigate.

How could that have possibly happened?

Someone simply had to be either asleep at the wheel or, worse, speeding through red lights.

Never mind the NCAA, North Carolina's taxpayers deserve answers to these questions

 

The thing is, UNC-CH's charges aren't as intense as USC but they are more broad. They cover Academic, Agent issues, Improper Benefits, Coach (not just a coach but their Assistant Head Coach AND lead recruiter - again, they don't need a burden of proof in these matters) acting as runner for an Agent, and former players acting as runners and having free access to the program (Hawkins). More broad range of violations than USC had so it's going to be interesting to see how they come down on them.

 

When did UNC receive that list of allegations?

 

This past Tuesday (June 21st). This is the NCAA's official Notice of Allegations. 9 Violations none of which were noted as Secondary so we are to assume they are considered major.

And, for the record, Ohio State's NOA was 13 pages long. UNC-CH's was 42 pages long.
