Are the Illini fans going to bash Self like the Hawks did Roy? I doubt they will. I never thought the Jayhawks would be so classless.

    Nope

I don't think we'll bash him. I won't. He's too good a coach, and I understand his need to be closer to home. He did a lot for Illinois by securing our spot on the national scene. It is a promotion. Lon Kruger was a different story becuz we knew he had NBA ambitions (despite reports he wasn't ready for it, he took off anyway).

Self is ready for KU, but how long before Oklahoma State comes calling?

Illinois' on the edge of being a power. We'll be in it if Charlie Villanueva comes even for a year. But I don't see that happening. Regardless, we have a young nucleus, and with any luck (Tom Crean?), the next coach will use the talents of a fast and gritty bunch -- The Flying Illini, 21st century edition?

Who's next? It's a good move to come back for Self but I really thought he might have been holding out for the Oklahoma State job when Eddie Sutton retires. That's probably out of the question now.

Sources: Self has accepted the KU men's basketball coaching job

Several sources confirmed today that Illinois coach Bill Self has accepted the head men's basketball coaching job at Kansas. Self arrived in Lawrence at 2:30 p.m. with one of his Illini assistant coaches, leaving two behind in Champaign for the time being. Self, who cut short a vacation to return to Champaign, Ill., told his Illinois players Saturday night of his decision, sources said. High school coaches of some of Self's Illinois recruits have confirmed he has told them of his decision to take the Kansas job. Also Kansas University has yet to call a news conference to announce the hiring, and university officials were mum this afternoon.
