Make SURE you know which port they are telnet'ing to. It is VERY likely not to be the standard port 23, and it is possible it is not even standard telnet (it might be a secure variant).

ok I can telnet to telnet://nethack.alt.org not sure what the hell is going on with this stupid thing. I am the only one out of about 30 field employees that is not able to telnet to our routers, very strange. thank you all for your help and advise.

You haven't said whether they use a non-standard telnet port, or whether there is IP security (an "allowed" list of IP addresses to connect to the telnet service on the router, maybe a requirement to use IPSec, maybe a certificate requirement).

sorry about that. I am using the standard port. I have not changed anything in that respect. port 23.

yeah, it's not what YOU are using, it's what the ROUTER is using. if the router is listening to port 1023 and you're talking on port 23, it ain't gonna work.

do your colleagues use the standard ms telnet in windows or some other telnet program? if it's ms, i think you have to spec the port # in the open command. i suppose it might have a setting burried somewhere, tho. you could try telneting to some bad address and it'll probably complain and tell you which port it tried to telnet to, just to verify which port is being utilized on their set up.

if they're using a more full-featured program (like putty or something) then you can look for explicit port # settings.

and it's possible as well that their computers have been given explicit access to the router as bootay mentioned.

stupid question, but is there any chance you're using an incorrect IP?

Maybe trying to use the inside address outside of the network? (sans a VPN tunnel?)
