I didn't expect them to do better than the sweet 16, it's just that most dookies did. I just wish they would have played a real schedule this year, so they would have a lot more losses.

    More parent griping

Now a former Tar Heel's parent is openly criticizing Doherty. Louis Boone calls Doherty an abusive coach. I wonder if the Notre Dame crowd will get in on this bashing now.

Note to Dick Baddour: run the athletic department or get out yourself

    Letter critical of coach
    Boone's father criticizes Doherty

By Barry Svrluga, Raleigh News & Observer Staff Writer

As North Carolina athletics director Dick Baddour continues his evaluation of the Tar Heels' basketball program and coach Matt Doherty, the father of a former player is inserting himself into the dialogue.

Louis Boone, the father of former UNC guard Adam Boone, said he sent a letter to Baddour criticizing Doherty's program based on his son's two years at Carolina.

"Whether they choose to use it or not, that's up to them," Boone said Saturday evening. "But I guarantee you it will warrant some type of defense or some type of response."

Adam Boone, who averaged 4.2 points and 2.2 assists in two years with the Tar Heels, transferred to Minnesota after the 2001-02 season. At the time, Louis Boone said his son left because of a "lack of respect within the basketball program."

He took that further in his letter, he said.

"At some point, kids realize the difference between a demanding coach and one that is abusive," Boone said. "We know there are hard, demanding coaches out there. This is different."

Louis Boone declined to reveal the full contents of his letter, but he did describe one incident in which Doherty left practice in frustration. Doherty then knocked over chairs and a ladder in a hallway between the court and the Heels' locker room, Boone said.

"Is that coaching?" Boone said. "These kids have been under demanding coaches over the years. They know all the differences between what's acceptable and what's not."

In a telephone interview, Doherty recalled knocking over chairs. He said it was a calculated motivational tactic, and that he has never come close to abusing a Carolina player.

"I can't walk out of a practice because they're not playing hard?" Doherty said. "I walked out of that practice, and instead of yelling, I saw these chairs and figured I'd knock them over for, you know, effect to get them to realize that, 'Coach is really mad.'

"Some coaches put their hand through a chalkboard. Some coaches throw a chair. That can fire up a team."

Doherty said he once kicked a trash can at practice, but he made sure it was empty before he did so. At halftime of a game against Massachusetts in his first season, he put a chair through a chalkboard because the Heels were playing "terribly."

"We came out and won by 29 points," Doherty said. "Coaches knock over water coolers. That can be calculated, to fire up a team. I've made sure that no players were in harm's way."

Doherty is 53-43 in three seasons at UNC, and has three years remaining on his contract. His relationship with his players has come under scrutiny since the end of last year, when three players transferred and others threatened to do so.

Baddour, who has not guaranteed Doherty's return next season, held meetings with each player last week as part of his evaluation. A few parents of players also met with Baddour, who has said he had no timetable for competing his evaluation, as did some members of the athletics department staff.

Not all parents of former players agree with Boone. Kathy Morrison, the mother of former UNC guard Brian Morrison, said her son still "maintained a good relationship" with Doherty and his staff. Brian Morrison, who transferred to UCLA, visited Chapel Hill during the season and attended a UNC game. He called Doherty afterward to thank him for the tickets, Doherty said.

Morrison's mother said her son didn't share the Boones' feelings.

"Absolutely not," Kathy Morrison said. "If you look back and see what he said, the reasons why he was leaving, there was nothing like that. That's all I can say."

Louis Boone said very few people have spoken out publicly against Doherty out of "respect for the program and the coaches who built it," referring to Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge, Doherty's predecessors. Guthridge's staff recruited Adam Boone.

"The silence has more to do with respect, I think, than because they love Matt Doherty," Boone said. "We know what we came into was a family, and it just turned topsy-turvy."

Doherty said that he had an exit interview with Adam and Louis Boone last spring, and none of the elder Boone's current concerns came up.

I read Doyell's article and all I have to say is this - if they fire Doherty because some scrubs and role players are unhappy, then we deserve our fate. The x factor here is Mccants - and he ain't talking to the media. I guess that Jackie Manuel's parents think he should be the goto guy. The first step to being the goto guy is LEARNING TO CATCH THE FUCKING BALL! Boone's dad should get out tapes of his son dribbling the ball off his foot about a million times last season before he opens his mouth. Ditto for Morrison's dad.

    Yep, exactly.

In addition, look at NC State - I'll give the administration credit for supporting Sendek vs. "The Wilkins family". Damien, Dominique & Gerald got what they deserved. Georgia. Harrick. No tourney.

When the kids run the program, it's not going to go forward.

Sour grapes. I think the Boone's just see this as a good opportunity to take a shot at Doherty and not be critisized for it.

I really dont care what Adam Boone's dad thinks of the way Doherty handles things. Does shit like this go on at other institutions? I'd like to think so. I'd be willing to bet it does and it just doesn't make it to the press like it has here.

It might be just that but the way Doh went after Collins makes me think it could be more. Physical and verbal abuse and intimidation would not surprise me.
