I think 140 is plenty for a guy who is 50. I am 38 and the machine at my gym put me at about 120 for "fat burn" and 140 for "cardio".

Running again is the hardest part. My upper body feels 20, but my knees feel 60. I'm just going to avoid distance running until I get some lower body strength back.

I know the feeling. I played football for 5 years and my knees and ankles took a beating. I worked out last night and did 4.5 miles at 4.3mph and at a 6-8 degree incline. Supposidely burned 500 calories. I've hit a plateau in weight loss (around 18 lbs) and it's pissing me off.

I have put some weight back on from my lowest weight in this thread. I am at 228 right now. I am down 5 pounds since January 1 though.

I do not know if I will ever get to my goal weight but I have decided to just take it one day at a time and do the best I can with it. If I can lose weight without doing a harsh diet then maybe I can keep it off. There is not much point in starving myself to lose 50 pounds only to gain it back in a year.

Sounds like you're relying too much on your workout to lose weight. You need to starve yourself. If you are not losing weight, you are consuming too many calories. It's that simple.

Why would you gain it back in a year? It's a lifestyle change to keep it off but maintaining a weight is the easy part.

I actually dropped below my goal weight of 180 by weighing in at 178 today so I am increasing my caloric intake a little starting today.

I seriously can't drop 5 more pounds. If I cut back any more calories I will turn into a very angry person. Any ideas?

I have done it before. I lost 54 pounds on Weight Watchers years ago only to gain it all back. A strategy of starving yourself for the rest of your life is not very realistic.

Most people that I have talked to who have actually lost significant amounts of weight and kept it off for several years lost the weight very slowly.
