Two Illini stars hurt at NBA camp

CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois guard Dee Brown broke his right foot at an NBA camp and might withdraw from the June 28 draft. He is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks.

Illini teammate Roger Powell also was injured at the predraft camp Wednesday at Moody Bible Institute, spraining his right ankle and leaving on crutches.

NBA spokesman Kent Partridge said Thursday that Brown broke the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during a game on Wednesday night.

Brown declared for the NBA draft last month but did not hire an agent, leaving open the possibility of returning to Illinois for his senior year.

``What we're telling Dee is that the most important thing now is for him to get healthy,'' Illinois assistant coach Jay Price told The (Champaign) News-Gazette. ``Whether he comes back or not is still his decision, and he has enough people around him advising him that he can make that decision.''

Illinois coach Bruce Weber was vacationing in Mexico on Thursday and was not available to comment.

UNC's Manuel Hurt at Camp

Broken toes may hamper NBA dreams.


Chicago-- North Carolina forward Jackie Manuel will miss the remainder of the NBA Chicago pre-draft camp after fracturing the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.

X-rays taken yesterday revealed that Manuel had suffered a hairline fracture on the outside of his left foot after slipping on a wet spot on the floor at the Solheim Center. He suffered the injury on Tuesday.

Manuel says he doesn't know if the injury would prevent him from working out for Seattle on June 21st. He had earned a spot in Chicago with a solid performance at the Portsmouth Invitational, the NBA's evaluation event for college seniors.

Manuel had been projected as a possible second-round pick for the NBA Draft. He says if the injury means he can't play in the league, he'll play overseas.

The injury also means forward Jawad Williams is the only one of six UNC players who have declared for the draft to be participating in Chicago. Rashad McCants, Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton and Sean May were all invited but chose not to play
