anyone heard these? supposabley a lot better music detail and several channels make the music "night and day" better than that from an ordinary CD. You need a cd or dvd player with optical audio out (fiber optic or cable) and a receiver that can decode the signal...and the classic home theatre type speaker setup.

Not much of a selection though.....and they are more expensive.

That's not entirely true...SACD and DVD-A both encode at a higher bitrate than do normal "redbook" CDs (24bit by 96,000 khz instead of 16 bit by 44,100). To decode them, all you need is a player with a DA than can decode. Many cheaper players can now decode SACD and DVD-A, but you won't hear a major difference unless you spend some jack on a high quality rig. To learn more, here's a great site www.stereophile.com The subscription is dirt cheap and you'll get the lowdown on $20,000 cd players, $75,000 turntables without cartridges which can run up to $10,000 themselves, speakers that can cost upwards of $80,000 per pair, speaker cables that cost $15,000 per 8' pair, and amps that run $30,000 or more per stereo pair. Fun stuff! Of course, they also have some reasonably priced stuff too.

Oops! I forgot to say that SACD on a good system is miles beyond what you can hear with a good quality "redbook" spec'd system.
