I found what appears to be a good article that deals with suicide at ChristianityToday.com. Use the link to read the whole thing. Here's an excerpt that speaks to, and I think clarifies, Paladin's point:
Really, though, read the whole thing. It's not long, and I think it covers the ground pretty well.

Sampson killed himself in an effort to kill the Philistines. I see no reason to believe he did not get to heaven seeing how God gave him back his strength so that he could accomplish his own suicide.

So, do you think they will be judged based on what was in their heart at the time they killed themselves?

I believe that a christian receives forgiveness for all his sins when he accepts Christ, past present and future. You have to admit you are a sinner and have a desire to repent of your sin that does not mean that you can never sin again and that you must confess each one to get forgiveness.

To me the prayer of salvation is more "Lord forgive me for what I am" than 'Lord forgive me for what I have done".

Yes, and that dovetails in with what Thelt posted above. Only God knows with any certainty if a person has made a sincere, and continuing commitment to following Him. That's true regardless of how a person dies.
