The “not so dead” Skins did look tough and whichever commentator said that their D would be among the top 5 in the league was probably right. Assuming that the Skins keep together a solid front four this year I can only think of a few defenses that look better on paper. Thank God Lewis will probably be courted away in the next year or two for a head coaching job. I just hope no one in our division hires him.
Guys I know that the Skins were torching the Niners scrubs and they put their starting O-line in for the third quarter but still, they were damned impressive! Even if they were just executing plays that well against their practice team without pads they looked polished, especially for the very first game in a scheme that was brand new to most of them. Yes, a few guys like Wuerffel and Green were already familiar with the offense but even that Rosenfels kid was starting to execute well in the 2nd quarter. BTW – As well as Wuerffel did last night apparently Matthews has been just as good in camp and consistently outperforms the others according to the sources I frequent.
Am I the only one here who can admit that those hated foreskins looked like a very talented capable team on both sides of the ball? If we can hold them to 38 – 10 (FG was botched) or better without risking any starters (like Spermier did) then at least we can claim to be on par with the Niners so far. )

They got what they wanted, but I caution you, Canteen boy. The Vikings look like contenders during the preseason last year. For most coaches, winning is secondary to evaluation. Lots of teams don't even practice with pads yet.

I could give a flip about winning. I'd like to see the first string excecute well though.

Yeah. Preseason, I want to see the ball run well. I want to see Weinke throw somewhat accurately. I want to see hustle D. I don't rightly give a damn what else happens, because I know we're not talented or deep enough to out-match teams, and that's what it's about in preseason.

I don't want to lose anybody to injury.

I'd like to see a win, just for the confidence of it all, but I don't care really. I don't want to see an 0-4 preseaon, as long as a win comes from somewhere.

I want to see the Panthers opening drive go 80 yards for a TD on about 10 plays.

Then I want to see the Redskins go 3 and out on their opening drive.

Then I don't want to see anymore starters on the field except for Sauerbrun & Kasey.

Well you're going to see a lot of starters the whole preseason, they have to find their rhythym and get used to working together in game conditions. Like it or not it's a new system for the second year in a row and a lot of people who've not worked together before.

true, piper. the vikings did do well in preseason last year, but i think it was only because they needed that encouragement for themselves that particular time. the team needed it so badly early on. the vikings were so down after the tragic loss of one of their best, kory stringer. at the risk of sounding defensive, i believe the regular season's poor showing by the vikings was a combination of reasons. IMO, it was mostly because of shabby coaching, mismanagement, and players like moss not stepping up! in addition, culpepper got hurt early in the season. the death of stringer had somewhat of an effect, too. the ensuing litigation and bad publicity went ugly. the whole franchise was in disarray. ideally, a true professional should not let all that affect his performance. it was not to be so for the vikes. (bleeding purple even as i type.) ;)

preseason is when one earns his position, specially for rookies. avoiding or minimizing injuries (or death!) will benefit a team more. preseason is the time for the team to gel and get their chemistry going.

things pan out different every year. case in point: the patriots. even the so-called experts could not predict it, and they hella try to do so every freggin year!

Sage had a rough start, but after that second series he was on the money 10-20 for 172 isn't bad for a former #3 QB. I just don't see him starting in Washington. Stevil will give the keys to one of his Florida boys initially...but he has been known to yank a QB now and then.

the more I look at it the more I think this is the game we're going to have to specialize and work on the nickel D.
They're two deep on D as well. This may get ugly.

Matthews. Who some say is a little peeved that we never let him start, even though he was only here a year.

I tell you what, the more I look at this game, everyone from the Redskins but Jeremiah Trotter and Bruce Smith, who should be out early, will be looking at this game like a grudge fuck.
