I just saw that the guy is on pace for 86 receptions and over 1100 yards.

In this offense, that's outstanding. I hope he can get his fucking attitude straight - but I'm not holding my breath. Shutting his pie-hole would be a good first step.

I think his agent put him up to all these media appearances in Prime Time and MSP. Kinda like show me the money. If he wasn't a punk, he'd have a big contract already.

since it's vogue to add idle speculation to significance, I'd like to point out that we were talking contract with Kerry Collins when he quit. We were talking contract with Ray Carruth when his legal problems started. We were talking contract with Chris Terry and then he got taken in.

Yeah, but in addition to these guys having attitude problems, their play was on the decline. Smith is having a great year. I'm sure there are things he can still improve upon, but for him to have 43 catches and over 500 yards at this point with this offense is downright impressive.

Smith's play, to me, makes this a different situation for the front office.

But he slipped several notches in my book, and I've always been rah-rah for Steve Smith.

    No.
Carruth wasn't playing great, but part of that was being the fourth target on the field. Even though Jeffers wasn't starting, he had the same catches as Carruth, and Muhs and Walls were getting theirs.

Terry's play declining? Eh? He's playing great ball right now. Collins' numbers were good in the first four games - on pace for nearly 4000 yards - but he was making a couple mistakes. Wouldn't say his play was declining as much as his motivation.

All of these guys are young players. Young players improve, and make mistakes, but all made conscious decisions that they were above their team with their actions. And we almost paid each one of them.

And yes, I agree, you've got flexall on you for a while.

On the tone of his meeting with Smith: We had a similar penalty happen in the Tennessee game with another individual. You just can't do it. They always catch the second guy. It won't be the last one called in the National Football League this season. I can promise you that. I know every head coach in the world talks about it. You try to avoid all penalties. We had other penalties that hurt us. We had dropped balls that hurt us. But it's not a perfect game, and you learn from it and move on. He's disappointed. I'm disappointed. It was a costly penalty.

The other individual was Stephen Davis.

Here's hoping Stephen Davis doesn't attack Rod Smart in a film session.

Well, Davis doesn't have a history of that. In the past, he's been the punch-ee.

The guy was trying to break Steve's ankle, so Smith did what came natural... get this damn guy off of me. Did Steve hurt the team by drawing the penalty, yes, but I can sympathize with him too. Out of the things he's done in the past, this one is rather 'tame' in terms of loss of temperment.
