Veteran guard Smith signs with Bobcats

    RICK BONNELL
    Staff Writer

Veteran guard Steve Smith signed with the Charlotte Bobcats Thursday. Team management hopes he will serve as a mentor to a roster full of young players.

At 6-foot-8, Smith has played shooting guard, small forward and point guard in the NBA. He's played 13 NBA seasons, most recently with the New Orleans Hornets. He was originally drafted by the Miami Heat and later played for Atlanta, Portland and San Antonio.

A former star at Michigan State, Smith has averaged 14.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in the NBA. However, he's been far more limited the past two seasons, not averaging double figures in either one. He played in 71 games for the Hornets last season, averaging 13 minutes.

hes a player I wished the Hornets would have picked up a few years ago. those playoffs against Milwaukee we could have used him off the bench or instead of a shorter Wesley,or Mash with his...vertigo..
still good example for the young bobcats. maybe he can teach those kids how shoot too

It is really hard for me to get excited about the Bobcats. The NBA as a whole has really gone down hill.
