I have misgivings...

    Troopers 2 Goes For Horror
Phil Tippett, director of the upcoming straight-to-video sequel film Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, told SCI FI Wire that he aimed more for horror than spectacle in the follow-up to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 original theatrical movie. "There was no way ... to achieve the spectacle of Paul Verhoeven's picture," Tippett said in an interview at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention. "They had close to $100 million, and we had [less]. So we took an old approach, which was going to [a] horror gulag. ... More psychological horror."

Tippett, who created the visual effects for the original Starship Troopers, makes his directorial debut with Troopers 2. He added that he recycled some of the original bugs for the sequel, but also create two new bugs: the parasite and the spy bugs. "The bugs have come up with another plan to infiltrate the humans," he said. "They have designed a kind of bug that is essentially a saboteur or hijacker, and they live inside of you and take you over. So we have the parasite bug, which is a bug that grows in people's heads, and then off of that ... are the babies or spy bugs. ... They're more conventional, spider-arachnid."

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation is due for release June 1, bundled with the original film in a DVD set.

yeah, tippet is not a director. the guy's been involved with movies for decades. you'd think if he was worthy of directing a movie he would have done so by now.

but hey, it's not like the first movie was any good.

I thought the first movie was pretty good visually. Denise Richards doesn't hurt. The dialogue was kinda cheesy, but it kept up with the book OK.

Yeah, I thought Denise Richards was pretty good visually, too.

    Korea Inspired Troopers 2

Edward Neumeier, writer of the upcoming straight-to-video sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, told SCI FI Wire that, if the first movie drew inspiration from World War II propaganda movies, the sequel draws from the Korean conflict. "We were also really talking about the Korean War of Korean War movies, Sam Fuller movies," Neumeier said in an interview at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention. "In those movies the people look older. They weren't a bunch of kids. They were crabby old men sometimes. And my knowledge of the Korean war was, you know, the clothing wasn't very good. The environments were very harsh. It was sort of a desperate thing."

Starship Troopers 2 takes place seven years after the events in the first film, which Neumeier also wrote and which was directed by Paul Verhoeven. Phil Tippett, the visual-effects artist on the first movie, makes his film directorial debut with Troopers 2. Neumeier said he used the creative war motif to give the sense that "the war had been grinding on so long and people were getting killed and people starting to think differently about whether this was a winnable war. ... There is sort of an underlying grimness to this picture." Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation is slated for a June 1 release.

Man, why does everything have to turn into Iraq all the time.

Just kidding. But you know you're in trouble when the special-effects guy is now the director. Twenty bucks says it sucks ass, but looks pretty good doing it.

The very fact it's going straight to video makes me think it will suck ass. I'd rent it for the special effects and any perfunctory nudie scenes, though.

It's going straight to video?!? Okay, never mind. This movie will suck, there's not doubt in my mind anymore. Hell, the only thing that goes straight to video is cheap Disney sequels and Olsen twins movies.

It's official. This movie will suck.

    Tippett Talks Troopers 2

Phil Tippett, who makes his directorial debut on the direct-to-video sequel Starship Troopers 2, told SCI FI Wire that he didn't have a difficult time making the transition from the world of visual effects. "I certainly understood all the production processes because of my day job as a visual-effects supervisor," said Tippett in an interview. "I was usually one of the first people hired that would work out a lot of the logistical things with the writers and directors. And of course, you have to deal with every department very intimately."

Tippett, whose previous work in visual effects includes the original Star Wars trilogy, Jurassic Park and the first Starship Troopers, said it was his work on the latter film that landed him his first directing job. "I've been looking for a project to direct for a number of years, and this is the first thing that came up," he said. "[Tippett Studio] did all the bugs in the first Starship Troopers. That was kind of their rationale for letting me do this."

The film centers around a squad of troopers trapped inside a remote outpost on a bug world called Planet Zulu. Tippett said the idea for the story came out of financial concerns more than anything else. "Realistically, we had to design a picture that would fit within that budgetary limitation," he said. "So it was really a design problem, how to get the Starship Troopers world, that world of expectations, in the tiny little space we had. So a great deal of effort went into that, working out the logistics of that."

The solution inspired the filmmakers to create of a new kind of enemy bug, which was much more economical in terms of the special effects. "The bugs come up with a new weapon, which is a saboteur that is able to sneak in amongst the troopers," Tippett said. "If Starship Troopers was Aliens, then ours is more like Alien. It's much more of a [haunted house] kind of a picture." Starship Troopers 2 will be released on DVD June 1.
