Luke did not fair to well against Vader to start with either. I have never seen how Luke was ever going to have a chance against the emperor. Without Vader changing sides it would have still all been for naught.

So a vague "prophecy" about someone coming along and saving everyone (or bringing the force "back into balance") was good enough for a bunch of Matrix movies but not for Star Wars?

Luke wasn't fully trained when he faced Vader the first time. If you remember the second time they fought Luke was more powerful. Had the Emperor not punked him after he'd dropped his lightsaber he might have been able to defend himself against the lightning. And even at that point Luke wasn't a Jedi Master. He was still at Jedi Knight status. But for the longest time I thought Vader was the chosen one because he's the one that killed Palpatine, but like I said Lucas recently said it was Luke. Something because he was unable to be turned to the darkside and he was able to turn his father.

I know Lucas has no plans to make the last three chapters but I wonder what they would be about if he did?

I always thought it would be really great to make movies based on the books that followed Return of the Jedi. There have been several really good series since.

Luke became Jedi Master after Yoda and Vader died because he was the only Jedi left. He had to grow into that role in subsequent stories.

He was kinda at "Knight" status when he fought Vader the second time.
