ok, then what was bigger? This was the first pro championship in the state's history (forget about minor league titles)...this is the big 4, of which the Carolina's can only win 3.

If you're talking about bigger sports moments that happened in North Carolina, I would say that N.C. State winning the national title(or even beating UCLA in the semis) in Greensboro is bigger. Payne Stewart winning the US Open in Pinehurst in '99 was bigger. Hell, Arkansas winning the '94 NCAA title in Charlotte was bigger.

If you're talking about bigger sports moments that happened to teams from North Carolina, I'd throw in every national title won by Duke and UNC, NC State's 1983 national championship and the Panthers losing the Super Bowl.

I'm not trying to poo poo the achievement by the Hurricanes. It's defnitely a great moment in Carolina's sports history, but there's no way that it's the greatest. It's not even close.

sorry, but I must respectfully disagree.

NCAA tourneys are 6 game winning streaks--spread out over 3 weekends. Tough, but not demanding.

Stanley Cup titles are 2 months of best of 7 series, with physical contact allowed within the rules. Oh, and that follows and 82 game schedule of the same thing.

Not to poo poo the NCAA titles won by the teams you mentioned--all are worthy of consideration--but NONE of them put the demand on the body and spirit like hockey.

I think you're arguing more which is the greater accomplishment. I'll agree wholeheartely that it's much tougher to win the Stanly Cup than to win an NCAA title. But I was arguing which was a bigger sports moment for the Carolinas. Most people this side of Raleigh barely knew there was a hockey team there three months ago.
