wonder how his time in the NFL will change how teams will play him. I mean, it's not like NFL players get speed once they are drafted. A defense that can easily keep up with the WR's can fuck up the fun n gun.

This is from WISTV.com, the website of a Columbia TV station:

Reports: Spurrier headed to USC if/when Holtz retires

(Columbia) Nov. 18, 2004 - Various media are both reporting former University of Florida Gators and Washington Redskins coach Steve Spurrier will be named coach at the University of South Carolina next week, apparently when current coach Lou Holtz retires.

The web site of the Nashville daily paper, the Tennessean, reports Spurrier is headed back to the Southeastern Conference and quotes "a source close to the situation." A story on ESPN.com says the network has confirmed the paper's story of an offer in principle to Spurrier to become USC's next coach.

The Washington Post reports Spurrier agreed to a deal worth reportedly between $1.5 million and $2 million on Wednesday after meeting with school officials with his agent.

The Tennessean says Spurrier will be announced as Carolina's head coach next week after this Saturday's game at Clemson. During a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday Holtz reminded everyone it's about one thing this week: Clemson.

USC Associate Athletic Director and Sports Information Director Kerry Tharp on Thursday morning said the report out of Nashville is incorrect. Tharp told WIS News 10, "It's Coach Holtz's call. When he decides what he's going to do, we'll go from there." Tharp says he can't talk about speculation.

ESPN reports Holtz is under contract to South Carolina through 2008, though that deal allows both the coach and the school out of the agreement with five days notice. The Post says Holtz would coach the Gamecocks in a bowl game.

Holtz has opened the door to talk about his future several times the past few weeks. He said he was worn out and tired. He has said Spurrier would be a wonderful choice to replace him.

On Tuesday Holtz was asked if he had spoke with Spurrier, a friend, about coming to South Carolina, "I've talked with Steve. We're friends. I've asked him how to cure my slice. That's about it." The Post says Holtz and Spurrier became especially close after Spurrier helped Beth Holtz gain admision to a Florida hospital for cancer treatment five years ago.

Last week Holtz addressed the possibility of Spurrier taking over at USC, "He would be an excellent coach for any program, but the last time I checked, there wasn't an opening here."

Steve Spurrier's brother, Graham Spurrier, told WIS News 10 he has not talked to his brother since Steve Spurrier asked not to be considered to replace Ron Zook at Florida. But, Graham Spurrier says his brother wouldn't decide until Lou Holtz does, saying the two are too close for it to be any other way.

The Post says the president of Augusta Nationa Golf Club, Hootie Johnson, a former USC fullback, is also involved in negotations with Spurrier, himself an avid golfer. Holtz is a member of Augusta National, which each spring hosts the Masters.

Holtz plans to talk to his players Thursday afternoon to make sure they remain focuses on the upcoming game with Clemson. South Carolina and Clemson play at Death Valley on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for noon.

The news comes the week after the Gamecocks lost to the college team Spurrier last coached, Florida, 48-14. Spurrier, 59, won a national title and six SEC championships in 12 seasons at Florida. Holtz, 67, has led the Gamecocks to a 6-4 record in this, his sixth season.

On SAturday I heard from a friend of Spurrier's agent that this was a done deal. I didn't take him seriously, although the guy is well connected and rich and stuff.
