The hits that should have sealed his fate were by Jeter, Williams or Matsui. Pick one. Actually, I think the hit that should have set a light bulb off in Grady's head was Giambi's home run an inning earlier. Once Pedro got through the seventh, Grady should have followed the formula that had gotten the Sox to a seventh game: Embree to face Johnson leading off the eighth, Timlin the rest of the inning and Williamson to close out the ninth. Simple, just like Grady.

I don't think that I have said this. I am sure that he has tons of baseball knowledge, but knowing everything about a situation and actually pulling the trigger are 2 totally different things. Like I said, I was hoping he'd succeed, but he has been making unexplainable moves all summer. Last night was just the most visable.

OK, I think everyone agrees Grady left Pedro in too long last night. That being said, hasn't Grady done a lot to pull this team together? Honestly, did everyone think they were playoff material at the beginning of the season? Didn't he bring out the best in his players?

And if you were going to replace him who is available that could do more with what they've got now?

Please I am just throwing some stuff around, I certainly don't claim to be a baseball connoisseur.

Somewhat, but a lot of that credit goes to Millar and Ortiz and even Nixon.

    Yes, almost everyone.

Didn't he bring out the best in his players?

Bill Mueller hit much higher than his historical average, and Nixon and Ortiz prolly had a breakout year. I'd have to go back through all of the info, but I don't think that anyone had a monster season. The team did what it was supposed to do, get on base and make pitchers work.

True..... not saying you did say it. It just seems that it become for awhile at least, the theme of this thread.

Until you get there and win it........every manager gets 2nd guessed.

I grew up on my Dad ripping Sparky Anderson for the Reds playoff failures in 1970 (WS loss in 5 games), 1972 (WS loss in 7 games) and 1973 (NLCS loss to those damn Mets).

Now that he is in the Hall of Fame, very few people recall those seasons.

This is the single best point that always seems to get forgotten. Sure, fans of a team get pissed off.

How do you think I feel, the Reds thought Jack McKeon was over the hill a couple years back. Since then, we've failed with Bob Boone & Dave Miley (to be fair, Miley was in a no win situation) while Jack has taken a bunch of fish to the World Series.

If you're going to run someone out of town........Make sure you have someone to replace him with.

Personally, I think the Cub fans have more to pissed off about.

Grady hadn't been in this position before.

This is the 2nd year in a row that Dusty managed a team to "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory".

Thanks 86. I just think Grady is making progress with the Red Sox and if you replace him now you start from scratch again.

Edit: And this is Grady's only second year as a MLB coach so he is going to make mistakes too.

I talked with Grady's son today and things are ugly. I told him to stay away from every radio and TV around. They have gone from an unbelievable high, to this. National media making fun of his speech, calling for his head, calling him stupid. Its the first time anything has happened like this to the family. This guy has done nothing but win for every team he has managed the last decade. He would of been better off losing to the A's. But no, they won that series and took this one to the end, and now he is crucified for the most part by people who don't know baseball over one bad decision. For those of you who don't know, Grady did go to Garringer and both his sons graduated from Independence in the early 90's. And of course, one of his sons played centerfield for UNCC from 91-94. This all has made me sick to my stomach. But he is getting paid millions and its part of the gig.
