Sure it does. If the cause of the war was slavery, then they achieved their goals as soon as the last slave state would have left. But that wasn't what they cared about, which is why they fought the war.

Even in late 1863, the abolitionists were by far the minority of the Republican party and many would have ceased to support the war if it became abotu slavery. But Lincoln needed a cause, and the abolitionists were dedicated and big enough to make a difference. He figured better to get 20% of the population that was 80% commited than 80% of the population that was 20% commited.

    Jesus, you are dense.

Who had that Constitutional convention for CA? Was it all the people? Or maybe just a subset that spoke for the rest of the people, same as the Souther states? Which is why you are being hypocritical.

And CA wasn't a state. Even if they had a constitution and had applied for statehood. So, the idea of states' rights does not apply.

Lepoards are found in Africa, southwestern Asia, and China. They are the most adaptable big cat and can be found in a range of habitats including: lowland forests, mountains, grasslands, brush country, and deserts. Because they are so stealthy, leopards can live very close to and often hunt in suburban areas. They mainly prey on medium sized ungulates like dik dik, impala, and gazelles. When ungulates are not present, they will prey on a variety of small mammals that include rock hyraxes, primates, goats, and rodents. Because of their small body size (compared to other big cats), leopards can vary their diet considerably. Their food distribution is abundant and scattered. The female must have a place for a den site on her home range. In the Kalahari desert female leopards will use aardvark burrows as a den site(Bailey 1993). The den site is usually dense vegetation or small rocky outcroppings. The den site is crucial for cub survival as it keeps cubs safe from predators. Leopards will cache their kills in trees to keep them from scavengers and other competitors like hyenas, jackals, lions, and tigers.

I had a pet dik dik named Mergetroid. He was eaten by a leopard when I was but a wee lad. Thanks for bringing back this most unpleasant of memories.

you have to agree though that the death of Mergetroid was not mearly about being killed and eaten. It was really about the leopard's right to defend his territory from the invading dik diks.

Slavery needed abolished. That doesn't mean that Lincoln's overall concern wasn't keeping the Union together, since foreign support of a divided nation would threaten the nation itself. Again, word games.

:satana: the "I know you are but what am I?" retort. Great job. Seriously - I don't care about state's rights. I'm not arguing it as an attempt to justify war. I'm arguing that if you are concerned about "state's rights", you'd be willing to admit that California's own intentions to be a free state would've been honored. The south wasn't worried about that, so I find it hard to believe the south wasn't simply looking to get its way and pretending that opposing federalism was the way to do it. Dress it up, it's still attempting justification to skirt the actual issue.

So the idea of "what they felt was right" shouldn't matter, but the south's feeling that a person should be enslaved to counter the north's industrialization being right should matter? Be consistent.
