Former North Carolina assistant coach Phil Ford, who said he has been contacted by N.C. State as a possibililty for the Wolfpack's head coaching position, is not a candidate for the job, a source in the N.C. State athletics department said Thursday.

Ford, an assistant with the NBA's New York Knicks, wouldn't specify who had contacted him about the job, except that it was not athletics director Lee Fowler.

N.C. State's job has been open since Herb Sendek resigned April 1. Since then, Texas' Rick Barnes, Memphis' John Calipari, former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and West Virginia's John Beilein have turned down offers by the Wolfpack.

Btw anyone have any idea why state is not talking to Bobby Cremins????.He was a very good coach at GT

Read tomorrow's Charlotte Observer for more details on this developing story.

Cremins is holding out for another possible job opening after next season.

State will have to start trolling for High School coaches before long at the rate they are going ...

You're worse than the media. Everything's blown out of proportion.

I don't know about that. It's no real shame that good coaches turned you down, especially considering that they got raises at their existing schools, but there are a number of reasons to be concerned.

#1) Your fan base is craptastic. The number of State fans was already shrinking, but now they've earned their reputation as malcontents as well. I wasn't all that impressed with Sendek either, but it's just bad to be seen as running off a reasonably successful coach.

#2) There aren't any obvious candidates left.

#3) It's become clear that State is no longer viewed as a premier program. It's closer to Clemson at this point than UNC or Duke.

Can't argue with that. At least it'd be understandable if the b-ball team sucked out loud and the record to show.

There aren't any big-named obvious candidates. Plenty of up-and-comers.

Was it ever a premier program? Not sure about that.

Agreed, but you're always taking a risk in those situations. The right guy could legitimately put you back into occasional contention for an ACC title, but the wrong guy could make things even worse. Just because I don't want to see ACC basketball fall any further, I hope the people at State continue to take their time and get someone who has a bright future rather than some mediocre name that will satisfy the fans.
