I hate the timing on all this. I expected to loose Del Rio next year. Another year as DC would have been a benefit to him. I hope Sam Mills gets the job because he would lend some continuity to a defence that ain't broken and don't need fixin'. But I wish Sam had another year in the system before moving up(if, in fact, he does).

What do you guys think about Coughlin? Not too many HC oppurtunities out there. He's kind of the same smashmouth football mind as Fox (defense first). Isn't he a Parcell's deciple?

I was never overly impressed with Coughlin's defenses in Jacksonville. The only year that they were pretty good was when Capers was there. Lebeau was pretty good as DC in Pittsburgh. He would probably do a good job here. Mills sounds like a good thing but I would not want to set him up to fail. I hope they evaluate his abilities fairly before giving it to him. Lovie Smith might be willing to leave the Rams, they do not play a style of offense that is condusive to a great defense like we do. Mills would probably be the best choice for us. He would always have Fox to help if he got in over his head a little.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting that Giants linebacker coach Tom Olivadotti is a candidate also, and may be the leading one.

Lovie Smith can't make a lateral move.
However, if they're allowed to leave (some coaches are being allowed, but the rules as they apply suggest you don't have to let them go - just like with Emmitt Thomas and Terry Robiskie being denied the ability to leave), two guys from the Bucs would be great to have - Joe Barry, linebackers coach, and Mike Tomlin, DBs coach. Tomlin's just 28 though.

    One name not mentioned

Denny Marcin, DL coach for the Giants.

Marcin coached linebackers Simeon Rice, Kevin Hardy and John Holocek (and Dana Howard) at Illinois as defensive coordinator under Lou Tepper.

I've read a line manual written mostly by Marcin. He's bright.
