He gets back pretty much everybody from this season. I think he'll stay one more year, then make a huge jump to somewhere.

I still don't beleive he is leaving.

-Before Buzz, Tenn fired a coach that loses in the first round of the NCAA every year.

- I wouldn't give Lutz more money even if we had it to give.

- If Lutz leaves, life goes on.

- Mckillop from Davidson - I don't know if he would entertain coming here. Crosstown rival and all, wouldn't it be like a slap in the face? I think he is a very good coach.
-Marshall from Winthrop - Also a good coach. I wonder what his salary is.
-Doherty - I heard he yells at the players. :biggrina:

The latest from UT

UT turns its search to Altman By CHRIS LOW
Staff Writer

KNOXVILLE — Creighton's Dana Altman has talked with Tennessee officials about the Vols' head men's basketball position and has emerged as one of the top candidates for the job, two people with knowledge of the search have told The Tennessean.

Altman, who's guided Creighton to the NCAA Tournament six of the last seven years, was recruiting last night and unavailable for comment. He just completed his 11th season at Creighton, where he's won 20 or more games for seven consecutive seasons.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Bruce Pearl, whose team faces No. 1 Illinois tomorrow night in the Sweet 16, also remains one of the front-runners. Pearl has been highly recommended to UT Athletics Director Mike Hamilton by former Tennessee All-American Ernie Grunfeld, now the president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards.

Hamilton, who has said he will not comment on the search, did not return phone messages last night.

Charlotte's Bobby Lutz confirmed that he's spoken by phone with Hamilton about the job. Lutz's 49ers lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last week to North Carolina State.

Texas Tech's Bob Knight has also had contact with the Champ Search firm assisting Hamilton, but two people close to the search process said yesterday that Knight is a long shot at best and likely won't be a part of the interview process.

Miami's Frank Haith has spoken by phone with UT Associate Athletics Director John Currie, and Alabama-Birmingham's Mike Anderson has also been mentioned in connection with UT's search. Athletics Director Watson Brown said he's yet to be contacted by anyone from UT requesting permission to speak with Anderson.

Former NCAA president Cedric Dempsey, who heads up the Champ Search firm, said the Vols could be down to a couple of finalists or possibly even have their man by the middle of next week.

Tennessee won't talk to Pearl until after his Wisconsin-Milwaukee team is eliminated in the NCAA Tournament. But he's sent word to Hamilton that he has serious interest in the job, according to two people familiar with UT's search.

Altman, 46, certainly fits the profile Hamilton said he's looking for in a coach. Hamilton said he wants someone who's had sustained success at a school, as well as postseason success.

Altman's Bluejays finished 23-11 this season and lost 63-61 to West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They earned the Missouri Valley Conference's automatic NCAA bid by sweeping three games to win the tournament championship.

Altman was the coach at Kansas State for four seasons before taking the Creighton job in the spring of 1994. Prior to Altman's arrival, Creighton had won a total of 24 games the previous three seasons. The Bluejays have averaged 23.4 wins in their last seven seasons.

This isn't the first time a school from a power conference has come after Altman. Georgia, Illinois and Iowa State all made pitches a couple of years ago.

Creighton does not release the salary figures of its coaches. But according to a SI.com report in January on the salaries of basketball coaches from 15 of the top private universities in the country, Altman was earning $672,067 in compensation for the 2003 fiscal year.

Buzz Peterson, who was fired on March 13, was making approximately $850,000 in total compensation.

Hamilton has said Tennessee could go as high as $1.5 million annually for the ''right'' coach. The Vols are in the market for their sixth head coach in the last 16 years.
