It's pretty much a done deal as long as Smoltz passes his physical.

I read where Brad Penny may already be done in Boston due to physical?

I don't understand why they would want him. He's old and has a bad shoulder. Maybe they will take Glavine too.

one year deal for $5 million before incentives. that's pocket change. it's no different than signing Colon last year. smart move considering the risk-reward.

Absolutely. Boston just wants him for October anyway. Very good move for the Sox, as is their signing of Baldelli. They're going to have problems down the line if Ortiz doesn't hold up, but aside from getting cheap on Teixeira, I like what they've done this off-season. Sucks for me since I hate Boston and Baltimore won't be good for another decade, if then.

the sox got cheap with Teixiera? They offered $170 for eight years. Boras wanted a contact from the Sox that, with vesting options, took it to $220 million over 10 years. Sorry, Collin, but Teixiera just isn't worth that.

So 5 million is pocket change for the Red Sox these days. Intersesting. So why not give Schilling and Glavine 5 million too? If 5 million is pocket change then 15 million is surely doable too. Maybe one of the three can actually contribute something positive by the end of the season.

I know that wasn't a real question, but I'll answer it anyway. they don't need that many pitchers is the best reason I can think of for not signing Glavine and Schilling. Of the three, Smoltz seems to management to be the best option.
