What does the bible say about smoking? Are you sinning when you smoke?

This guy was talking to the preacher at the ballpark and asking him to pray for him cause he just can't give up ciggerettes. He was really down on himself, saying if he was really saved, he could put down the smokes.

The Bible doesn't mention anything about smoking, that I'm aware of, but it speaks often against allowing ourselves to become "slaves" to things, which is another way of saying "addictions".

If the man is truly saved, he does have the power to stop smoking. The question is whether he has the desire to. God doesn't make people stop doing bad things.

NO, even if you called is a 'sin' we are all going to heaven as sinners.

he is pretty convinced he is doomed cause he can't seem to kick the habit. He was born again years ago but he feels if he were truly saved, it would be easy to give up smoking. he thinks it means, he's not saved.

anything you do to harm your body, especially something you do in excess that harms your body is a sin.

He probably has some preacher beating him over the head about smoking. Some preachers have "pet" sins they harp on. When I was a kid I heard countless sermons about how you should destroy your television. Thankfully my dad never bought into it even though he is a devout church member to this day.

Not if he's truly saved. If he's truly saved, Jesus has already taken the punishment for that sin.

Having the ability by the power of Christ to overcome an addiction doesn't mean the fight will be easy, or even short lived. Paul fought things in his flesh for years (Romans 7). I have too. Having to continually fight ungodly cravings doesn't mean we aren't saved. On the contrary -- God often uses trials and challenges like that to keep Christians humble and dependent on His strength, rather than our own.
