patch... but you have to want to quit.

  2. Good for you for realizing you need to quit. It's harmful to you and those around you (pets included). But why set the quit date as October 7th? Why not make today the day? If you truly want to quit, quit. Don't rationalize smoking tobacco. When the urge hits, re-read this post or remember how it made you feel, smell, taste when you smoked. I would think people in the health profession would abstain from such a vile practice, but the nurses I've known smoke like chimneys. Find something else to occupy your mouth and hands with. Maybe try a pipe.

I think I may have mentioned this before...

Both my parents have smoked in their lifetimes. Dad smoked from the time he was 13 until he reached 25 and my sister was born. He threw a pack of cigs out the window that day (May 1958) and he hasn't smoked since. Not even a cigar with me on the golf course during vacatio - I offer every year. He said it was one of the hardest things he ever did at the time though.

On the other hand, my Mom smoked for a good 30 years until her lung collapsed when I was in college. It scared the hell out of all of us. But get this - she was released from the hospital on a Sunday and was lighting up again on Wednesday. The entire family went berzerk. My bro, sis and I threatened to never come home again if she didn't quit. So she quit. But it was hell on her. She had to make some serious diet and other habit changes to kill the urge. It has not been easy. She can't be around smoke or she freaks.

Now, my bro still smokes like a chimney. (so do my future in-laws). I don't get it. He's tried to quit multiple times and we all give him shit, but no dice. I think it's that Carolina livin' that does it to you. ;)

Anyway, Reb is right. You have to want to quit and you have to make wholesale lifestyle changes (like dieting, etc.). Don't do it half-ass or you'll never kick it.

I can be an impulsive person, but with something this serious, I have to plan for it. Rich has some Zyban I am gonna get from him this weekend. I wanna buy some patches. I am also gonna try to cut down a bit by the set date.

I've got that part covered! ;)

    Fred,
Once you decide that you are going to do it, The hard part begins. You will not be kicking one habit ,but probably hundreds of habits.IE, Smoking after eating, smoking while on line, smoking while driving,. It is not easy! Not Fun! You have already passed the first hurdle, admitting that you want to quit. A lot of smokers will say if wanted to quit ,I would. Do they really believe anyone buys that crap!!

My worst times for wanting one...

    1- after I eat
2- first thing in the morning
    3- after sex :D
4- when driving (and I drive all day on the job)
5- when I am out drinking with friends
    6- when I play on-line

    Between #1, #3 and #6, I'm in trouble!

I'm not really an addictive person. I don't like sedatives, pain pills and that kinda stuff. Why is this so damn hard?
