Does sleep mode on a computer use more electricity than it would use if it's turned off?

    No.

If a computer goes to standby, suspend, or hibernate, it consumes, on 99% of computers, about 3w of power. When on a standard PC consumes 55-100w of power, depending on video cards and processor and such (serious gamer machines or the like can really spike above that).

Some RARE machines don't really standby well, but that's basically cured in the last decade.

i've recently started using standby a lot more aggressively and it's been great. i'll occasionally have to reboot when it doesn't come out of sleep, but it's only maybe 1 in 10 or 20 times.

i guess i had bad experiences in the past or i would have been doing it a lot longer.
